above ground pool ladders Buyer’s Guide

If you keep the before points in mind, you can easily go out to the market and buy above ground pool ladders, right? No!

A. Round or Oval

Depending on the size of your back yard and the regulations placed by your local ordinances on above ground pools, you have to decide whether a round or oval pool is most appropriate for your set up. In some cases we come across, customers lean more towards the oval shape because they assume it is bigger. However, again, depending on the size of your back yard, the round pool may still be more logical.

If aesthetics plays a major role in your selection, when you build a deck with an oval pool it closely resembles an inground pool. Many families prefer this look over a traditional round pool.  In the end though, it really depends on what you want and need from your pool.

C. Size

For above ground pools, size does matter. And by size I am definitely referring to the size of your backyard. Before making a purchase, we recommend you researching your local pool ordinances. I know most areas have restrictions on the space that is left between your pool and the surrounding structures. You do not want to purchase a pool only to return it after your installer advises it goes against local codes and he cannot install it. Please do not take the size of your pool lightly.

Step II- Selecting a Liner

The concept of a pool liner is simple-it protects the floor and walls of your pool. One of the main purposes of a pool liner is to extend the life of your pool by preventing damage from occurring to the pool itself. Pool liners are very important to the overall aesthetics of your pool, but also or more importantly, it’s really what’s holding your water in place. Think about it. If you get a hole somewhere in your liner, your pool will begin to leak. Depending on where the leak is, you may not even notice is right away. The water, unbeknownst to you, is now leaking on your steel uprights.Over time, the water will cause the steel to deteriorate and force you to replace parts earlier than you should. In short, your liner is very important.

There are types of liners. Do you know them? Keep reading because one liner may be more appropriate for your pool setting.

Step III- Pump and Filter System

After you have your pool and liner, the next thing you should focus on is the pump and filter system. Your pump and filter system, though not as expensive as the pool itself, is considered to be the heart of your pool. Your pump is what keeps the water inside your pool circulating. As the water circulates, it is pulled through and back out of your filter.Without this constant process, your pool water will remain stagnant, making it more of a cesspool than swimming pool.

There are three different types of filters that you can choose from: Sand, Cartridge, or Diatomaceous Earth (DE). Depending on what part of the country you reside, some filter types may be more common than others. Are you familiar with any of these types? Which type of filter do you know the most about? Do you know the major differences? Let’s dig a little deeper.

D.E. Filter

D.E., or Diatomaceous Earth, filters use tiny fossilized exoskeletons of diatoms to filter out particles. Similar to cartridge filters, D.E. filters utilize grids located inside the filter tank that are coated with D.E. powder. The D.E. powder catches debris, like the sand filter does, but on a smaller scale. D.E. filters can filter particles as small as 5-microns. In comparison, D.E filters provide the overall best filtration for your pool.

Although D.E. filters are great at filtering debris, the maintenance costs to keep your unit working are definitely higher than sand and cartridge filters. Replacement grids should be cleaned every few months and are more expensive than the cartridges or sand.

Also, because D.E. powder is carcinogenic, there may be local codes that prevent you from backwashing your filter in drains. Although they are the best filtering option, the overall maintenance is greater.

You will need to get technical, as the materials your pool is manufactured from determines how long your pool will endure the elements and time. Your investment here is important, and as with anything else, when cutting costs, you may end up spending more.

There are several options available, such as aluminum, steel and plastic, or a mixture of these. All of them come with their own sets of pros and cons, and you may want to do more research to decide which will work the best for you.

This was an expensive lesson for me on a recent purchase of a pool with an inflatable rim. Birds that landed on it quickly popped this seemingly clever invention and ruined an entire summer for the children.

Installing the Pool

Many people don’t seem to have any issues installing the pool themselves.  It is a DIY type project and generally only takes a few hours.

If you are not technically minded or have physical limitations, you may want to consider hiring professionals to take on this step. While not as time consuming and rigorous as building an in-ground pool, installation is still a technical step.

The area needs to be as perfectly level as possible, and layered with sand. There is quite a bit of stabilizing and bonding of elements involved, along with installation of the filtration and pump.

Many customers decide to do the preparation and installation themselves. The most important step is to make sure to get the ground very level.

The next step is to choose a liner. We offer a basic, solid blue liner along with liners that have a pattern. Some patterns have the option to pick a 20 or 2gauge liner. These are both reliable liners, but the main difference is going to be the warranty on the liners and the thickness. The higher the gauge, the more puncture resistant the liner will be, and the longer it will stand up to sun and chemicals.

One & Two

I know which pool I want to order and have measured my backyard for space. I was hoping that I’d be able to get a 24’ round pool, but because I want to have a deck, I am going to have to go with a smaller pool. Based on what I measured, I will be able to install a 18’ pool in my backyard.

Steps Three & Four

In this step, I need to select a liner, which in this case is the Rolling Wave 20 gauge pattern. The fourth step is to pick out an equipment package. I want to get the best pool filter type, so I have checked the option for Diatomaceous Earth (D.E).  As in the first example, the pool package will include the equipment; start up chemicals, ladder, etc.

The Grand Entrance Step

All of these aboveground pool steps support 400 lbs, ship FedEx, and are made of high density resin polymers for superior UV resistance. They fit flat bottomed pools, with wall heights from 48-5inches, with arms to attach to your existing pool deck.

Aboveground pools without a deck will need to have a step or ladder on the outside of the pool, in addition to the steps on the inside of the pool. These outside steps should be in the locked position when the pool is not in use, to prevent small children from climbing into the pool, unsupervised.

Confer Deluxe Pool Entry System

This ground pool ladder was built with the elderly as well as the physically challenged in mind. The way it is designed means much easier and more stable access to the water. No wobbly ladders, no unstable footing and is always safe.

Our Number One Mid-Range Choice!

The Intex Ultra Frame Pool Set is a mid-range pool that stands head and shoulders above other pools of similar price and size, this one can easily fit people. Engineered for strength, the Intex Ultra Frame Pool is supported by incredibly strong, durable steel frames which are powder coated for rust resistance. Triple strong, super-tough laminated sidewalls are reinforced with an all-around band to keep the frame legs firmly in place.

Each Intex Ultra Frame Pool set includes a Krystal Clear Sand Filter pump, ladder, ground cloth, debris cover and set-up and maintenance DVD. Everything you will likely need to keep your pool running smoothly throughout the year.

Our Number One Budget Choice!

The Bestway Steel Pro Frame Pool is a budget friendly option for those who prefer a sturdier metal frame pool to an inflatable pool. The durable PVC and polyester side walls should ensure your pool lasts a lot longer than your typical inflatable pool, it even comes with a PVC Repair Patch Kit.

The super easy assembly of the Bestway Steel Pro Frame Pool means you can get the pool up and running in next to no time at all. While it may be a budget option, that doesn’t mean it lacks in features, it includes a 330 Gallon Filter Pump and Filter Cartridge, set-up and maintenance DVD and a flow control valve for easy drainage.

If looked after correctly, your pool should last between and 1years. This makes it a great investment.

The costs are cheap, the setup is usually simple and the longevity is decent. All in all, they are a total bargain.

This video explains it perfectly:

A far cheaper and more reliable option is to sink your above ground pool a few feet into the ground (half way) and then build some good quality decking around, in my experience this costs around 500 bucks (when done by yourself) and looks even nicer than plain in-ground pools.

Size matters

This will largely be limited by the size of your back yard and your intended use. A general rule of thumb is one swimmer per 1sq. ft.

The depth of the pool will have a direct influence on the volume of water and therefore the maintenance cost of keeping the pool clean.

If you have small children you should consider a  shallower pool. Luckily most pools are available in a variety of depths.

Aluminum is lighter, cheaper and more flexible than steel but not as strong. Aluminium does not rust but is still susceptible to oxidation over time.

Resin does not corrode at all and needs the least maintenance. It is more expensive than steel and aluminum. The only downside is that resin is not as sturdy.

Because the various materials have different strengths and weaknesses they are often used together to combine the best of both worlds.

Pool liners are made of vinyl and come in various thicknesses and types. Even with a hard-sided pool it is the liner that keeps the water in place.

The edge of the vinyl simply overlaps the edge of your pool and is kept in place with coping strips. If your liner has a pattern or texture it might be a bit tricky to line up nicely at the top.

The top of the liner has a thick bead that installs into a track at the top of the pool. Since the liner does not go all the way to the top it is possible for water to get between the liner and pool wall.

To keep the water safe and enjoyable for swimming you need to kill bacteria, eliminate algae growth and control any other type of contaminant. There are two main types of sanitation used for your pool.

Depending on the type of pool you choose installation can take anything from a couple of minutes to a day or two.  Lots of people leave this up to the professionals, but familiarizing yourself with the steps involved will be beneficial in deciding if your DIY skills are up to the task, or at least being aware of what the professionals will do once they arrive.

Most pool kits come with clear instructions and there are several youtube videos that should make the process much easier. Listed below are the most common steps, please keep in mind that they are not applicable to all types of pool.

You won’t enjoy your fancy new pool if you can’t get into it.

A good heater will prolong your swimming season. Consider a solar heater if you plan on using your pool often as it will end up paying for itself.

Several options are available and LED lights are cheap to buy and run. You can even automated them to switch on and off by themselves.

Ready… Set… Swim!

Coming from Intex, which has been making above ground pools for almost 20 years now, this inflatable pool can easily be installed and can hold up to 1,48gallons of water. Aside from the easy assembly, it is also easy to drain. You just have to connect it to your existing garden hose.

Since every Easy Set Pool comes with an instructional DVD and filter pump, it makes it ideal for the family’s first above ground pool. In addition, this pool is also easy to carry, which then makes it easy to transfer.

However, you might want to place a ground cloth below this pool because the grass will stick right to its bottom and it would be taxing to clean it. Placing a ground cloth below will make the pool easier to clean.

There is also a concern with its pump. Because of its basic quality, chemicals should be added to keep it clean. The filter in the pump should also be changed at least every two weeks. But if purchasing is a bit arduous, then taking out and rinsing the filter will do.

Intex has done that great job again with this durable metal frame pool set. Available in 12’ x 30”, 15’ x 48”, 18’ x 48”, and 24’ x 52”, this pool set features Super-Tough laminated PVC sidewalls, Krystal Clear Cartridge Filter pump, Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter, and new dual suction outlet fittings. The picture above has the 12’ x 30” size and can hold water up to 1,71gallons.

The PVC sidewalls are so durable your kids can even sit on it! The Krystal Clear Cartridge Filter pump allows you to enjoy clean, refreshing water. It even has a one-year warranty. The Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter shuts the pump off if the electrical current is exposed to water, which is a great safety feature. Plus, there is a convenient drain plug that connects to your garden hose to allow water to be drained away from the pool. New dual suction outlet fittings also improve the circulation of water for better water hygiene and clarity.

On the other hand, the filter is small for the pool size and needs to be cleaned often. It may break after three days, too. But this problem can be solved by purchasing a bigger filter for your pool.

In case you think the metal frame pool set isn’t strong enough for your family’s swimming activities, then try the Intex Ultra Frame Pool Set that’s three times strong than their Easy Set Pool Set. Like the metal frame pool set, it features Super-Tough laminated PVC sidewalls, convenient drain plug, and new dual suction outlet fittings. The pool measures 18’ x 52” and can hold up to 6,98gallons of water, which is about 90% of the pool size.

The sidewalls on this triple-strong pool are reinforced with an all-around band to keep the legs of the frame where they should be. It’s also ready for water in just an hour. The convenient drain plug can be connected to a garden hose for draining and the new dual suction outlet fittings improve water circulation, resulting to cleaner and clearer pool water.

This set is totally “ultra” because it includes a set-up and maintenance DVD, Krystal Clear Filter pump and saltwater system, a ladder, a ground cloth, a debris cover, a maintenance kit, and a surface skimmer.

But despite all these features, there are still a few concerns. For one, the sand filter and the pump are inadequate for the size of the pool. Another would be the liner that is thin and doesn’t last long.

If round and oval above ground pools are too typical and you have an unlimited budget, then an Intex Rectangular Ultra Frame Pool Set is perfect for your family. It is offered in 18’ x 9’ x 52”, 24’ x 12’ x 52”, and 32’ x 16’ x 52”. The pool in the picture measures 32’ x 16’ x 52” and can hold water up to 14,36gallons at 90 percent capacity. This pool highlights an Ultra Frame Pool, Krystal Clear Sand Filter pump, and a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter.

This easy-to-assemble above ground pool is made for strength. Its durable steel frames are strong and they are even powder-coated to resist rust, maintaining its original appearance even after numerous uses. The Krystal Clear Sand Filter pump allows you and your family members to enjoy sparkling, clean water in 60 minutes. For additional safety features, it also has a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter that shuts off the pump when the electrical current is exposed to water.

The set includes a filter pump, a ladder, a ground cloth, and a debris cover.

For all that, it still has a bad side. The set doesn’t include a maintenance kit and a skimmer. The instructions for the pump installation were difficult to follow and the ladder is cheap.

The steel frames are locked together using T-connectors and C-clips. All fittings have been designed to lock together easily. The PVC flaps hide the connectors and clips to prevent injury and rust. The pool wall is proven to be heavy-duty. The entire pool is also easy to set up—installing will only take an hour. With the flow control drain valve, it is also easy to drain. Plus, it can hold water up to 4,23gallons at 90 percent capacity.

However, the inlet and outlet openings aren’t well-reinforced according to customers. The filter hoses seem to drag on them as well. Despite their claim to have rust-resistant steel frames, the poles actually rust after several months. The package may miss some or a lot of parts. Lastly, because the pump and the filter are small for the pool, the water doesn’t circulate much.

Ready for bathing!

A great tool for summer. An above ground pool not only allows you to enjoy cooling off during warm weather, it also brings you the comfort of home! With an above ground pool, you don’t have to go to public pools just to relax and play in the water. You won’t get disturbed and pool rules are up to you.

Perfect for water therapy. Above ground pools allow you to undergo water therapy especially if you need to recover from joint problems or any kind of pain for that matter. Above ground pools that are shallow can be used to retrain your muscles to gain your physical strength back. An above ground pool can help you recover from arthritis and paralysis. And because the pool is just on your property, you can go in for a swim anytime you’re feeling any joint pain. Autistic children receive great benefits from swimming as well, according to research, especially if they do it with their pets.

Takes less space. Most above ground pools are smaller in size than in-ground pools. This makes them require lesser space from your yard. And because of this, an above ground pool also requires fewer chemicals than an in-ground pool.

Easy to install and portable. Aside from the fact that they can be installed in less than two days even for the largest one of them, above ground pools also allow you to transfer them to another location when you like. In less than two days, they’ll be prepped for swimming. You just have to set it up out of the box and fill it with water.

Saves your taxes. They are temporary attachments to your home which means they don’t add value to your property like in-ground pools are.

Easy to store. If you want to store it during winter and you’re lazy to winterize it, there’s another option: you can drain it and allow it to dry for storage.

Deluxe In-Pool

Having trouble keeping out debris from falling into your pool? This above ground pool cover might just be what you need. It’s a round cover that provides a generous overlap for 15-foot pools. Equipped with metallic frames, the cover sits sturdily to take the weight of trapped debris. It has drain holes large enough to prevent water accumulation yet small enough to keep out debris. The cover comes with a heavy duty rope that tightens it up and keeps it from being blown off.

Intelligent guidance system

One of the features that make the Pool Rover Junior so efficient and quick is the internal guidance system.

Once you set it in the pool, it figures out the quickest and most efficient way to clean your pool.

This allows it to efficiently clean above ground pools of different shapes including L-shape, oval, kidney shape and rectangular without any problem.

Customer Feedback

The most common complaint is with the quality of the material used on the Pool Rover Junior. Many customers noted that the plastic wheels and axles are weak and might not last very long.

Customers also caution that the power unit should not be left outside since it is not waterproof. It can easily get damaged if it is rained on.

A 50-foot swivel cable

There is nothing as annoying as a cable that keeps tangling as the cleaner moves in the pool.

You have to take time after every clean to untangle the cable. Sometimes you even have to rescue the cleaner after it stalls in the middle of a cleaning session.

The Aquabot S2-50 solves this problem by including a 50-foot swivel-cable that does not kink or tangle.

Highly economical

This is one of the strongest selling points of the SharkVac.

This robotic pool cleaner is designed to be highly energy efficient, using very little power on each cleaning cycle.

In fact, each 2-hour cleaning cycle uses the same amount of power as a light bulb left on for the same amount of time.

Saves you time and effort

Cleaning a pool with a brush is a grinding task that will take up all your precious time.

Even if you use a cleaner that relies on your pool pump, you most likely still have to clean the steps and walls yourself.

A robotic pool cleaner does this for you. A good one will not only scrub the floor, it will also reach the hidden corners, tackle the steps and even climb on the walls for an all-round cleaning.

Saves you money

A traditional pool pump-driven cleaner tends to require many parts and is expensive to install.

A robotic pool cleaner comes ready to use without requiring any additional parts or installation. Just plug it in and it is good to go.

Furthermore, modern robotic pool cleaners are designed to be highly energy efficient, ensuring you spend as little money as possible on your power bills.

Three are from

Aquabot, the first brand to specialize in less-expensive above-ground robotic pool cleaners.

The 4th is from Hayward, the leader in higher-priced and more sophisticated in-ground pool robots.

As usual, we limit our top selections to pool cleaners that have been on the market for more than a year, because durability is a key concern for any robotic pool cleaner.

Pool Kits and Installation

The above costs are for the pool only. This usually includes the pool liner, sides, and edging as well as a pump and ladder. These pool kits are designed for the average DIYer to install in a day or two. Some handy DIYers install the pool and then build a deck around it for a truly custom look.

Keep in mind that some companies sell kits but don’t offer installation. Decide beforehand if you want someone else to do the work and ask up front.  Be sure the work as well as the pool is warrantied.

Features and Add-Ons

While pool kits generally include a pump and ladder, there are other things you might consider for your pool. Whether you plan to use it for relaxing, partying, or exercising, there are plenty of options to suit your lifestyle.

Pool Maintenance

Skim the pool regularly. Debris will fall into your pool no matter what, and skimming it will keep larger particles from getting into your filters and/or decaying and contaminating your water.

Clean out your pump filter. A skimmer can’t get everything, and that’s what pump filters are for. You may have to replace your filter once per year depending on pool use. If these get clogged, your pump may stop working and your water will be unsafe for swimming.

Clean your pool. Take a soft-bristled pool brush and sweep the bottom and sides of the pool. This will knock any stuck debris loose. A pool vacuum can then be used to vacuum it all up.

Test the water. A pool test kit is a must to make sure you have the proper balance of chlorine and other chemicals. Follow the instructions exactly and keep up on this to make sure your water stays safe to swim in.

Add chemicals as necessary. Following the directions in your test kit, add what is needed to bring your pool into balance.

Properly maintained, your pool should last to years.

Aquatic therapy are exercises that are performed in water for the purpose of rehabilitation of physical functions associated with injuries in the back, knee or ankle joints, lower back pains or other injuries.

The exercise may include water walking, knee lifts, knee-to-chest stretch, flutter kick and jogging. Read more about benefits of hot water and Aquatic Therapy here.

Hot Water Therapy

Warm water is relaxing and stimulating. Soaking in warm water works wonders for many musculoskeletal conditions. It is one of the oldest forms of alternative therapy for arthritis, lower back pain and fibromyalgia.

The buoyancy in the water reduces the force of gravity that compresses the joint and the warm water increases the blood circulation in the body and reduces the swelling and inflation.

What is healthy temperature for Hot Water Therapy? Anywhere between 9and 100 degrees Fahrenheit are healthy range.  The heat and moving around in the warm pool will stimulate the immune cells to travel among your tissues and nurture tissue repair. To get the best benefit of the hot water therapy you have to be in the water for more than 20 minutes.

I did my bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from Mississippi State University. Now, I am a proud father of a beautiful and sweet daughter. And she loves water and pools. I did a lot of research before buying my first pool about summers ago. Planning for a replacement pool soon. My experience with my first pool made me research further and I gained some knowledge in the process. I thought I should create a web site to share my knowledge. So here it is.

Splash Pools Deluxe A-Frame Ladder

Intex 15ft x 48in Easy Set Pool Set

This pool comes with ladder and is easy to install. You can use it just after 1minutes of installation. It is made up of tough laminated PVC sidewalls. It is safe to use as it is equipped with ground fault interrupter. Whenever electric current is exposed to water, this fault interrupter shuts off the pump.

Therefore, we can say that this is one of the best above the ground pool, you can think of. In case you face any problems in installing it, you can refer the DVD, which comes with the pool setup. It has all the instruction and precautions mentioned.

Intex 12ft x 30in Metal Frame Pool Set

Those who want a sturdier pool, they can go for it. Many people find it very cheap, and it lasts longer than other easy set pools. Installation takes 30 minutes, so it is also a great advantage of buying it. It comes with pool ladder and filter pump. This pool is very well engineered to tolerate stress. It is made of strong steel frames.

The frame is coated with a powder that makes it corrosion resistant. The side walls are equally strong and are laminated by PVC. Along with all this, it has few other facilities such as Krystal Clear Cartridge Filter Pump and Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter. The filter pump provides clean water and circuit interrupter provides safety from electric shocks.

There are many above the ground pools available in various shapes and sizes. However, we should keep in mind the safety and durable of the pool before buying a new one. If you prefer rectangular pools, then Intex Rectangular Ultra Frame Pool is best for you.

It is a great option as its interiors have blue tiles print. It has two variants; standard and deluxe. If you go for Deluxe, then you will get a maintenance kit and volleyball set for free, along with other accessories.
