Test Results and Ratings
Why did this canopy win the first place?
I am very happy with the purchase. It is definitely worth its money. The product is top-notch! I don’t know anything about other models from this brand, but I am fully satisfied with this product. The product is very strong. Its material is stable and doesn’t crack. The rear part fits perfectly! It is mounted really tight and reliable.
Why did this canopy come in second place?
The design quality is top notch and the color is nice. Managers explained me all the details about the product range, price, and delivery. I like this product. For such a low price, I didn’t even hope it to be any better. It’s decently made. The material is pretty strong and easy to wash if needed.
Why did this canopy take third place?
A very convenient model. It is affordable and made of high-quality materials. It is inconvenient to use due to the size. I am going to get something different next time. I liked the design. We’ve been using it for 2 months and it still looks like brand new. It doesn’t squeaks nor bents. Looks great in my apartment.

The tent measures by 20 ft. the metal stakes and ropes help to add more stability to the tent while the six removable side panels make it ideal for any purpose. The assembling instructions attached to this canopy tent make setting it up a breeze while its top quality steel frame construction gives unrivaled durability and stability even in windy environments.
Canopy tents are essential in spicing up most outdoor events. Coming in different varieties, selecting the perfect canopy tent remains a difficult task. Fortunately, through in-depth research, I came up with the best canopy tents on the market. You should not hesitate to give either a try.
However, for the best results, I recommend the Clam Corporation 987Quick-Set Escape Shelter. This is the best canopy tent on the market because it boasts an excellent quality, comes with a carrying bag and features water-resistant roofing.
PRE-ENGINEERED vs. CUSTOM DESIGN
Cost: A pre-engineered canopy is the most economical option based on price. For short term or rare usage, the durability of the shelter won’t be a determining factor, and in these cases a pre-engineered canopy may be the best choice, purely for the investment.
Specialization: One of the most common reasons to choose a custom canopy design is for unique applications and unconventional size or shape. Pre-engineered structures do not offer the specialization and variable sizing capacity that you can access with a custom design.
Longevity: Custom-designed canopies are often made with higher-quality materials that increase their durability and longevity for use. You can also work with a building specialist to ensure your custom canopy is made with specific materials that are ideal or most applicable to how you plan to use the structure. Additional treatments and coatings may be necessary to provide the longevity and durability that you require.
The primary materials for most of today’s canopy structures are some form of metal for the framing system, which is covered by a weatherproof tensioned fabric membrane.
WeatherPort™ Shelter Systems exclusively uses a highly engineered 1oz. Vinyl Fabric Tension System for our cover/curtain material. This highly-durable polyvinyl chloride (PVC) membrane can be additionally treated for more longevity or special protection, such as coating to more effectively protect against UV rays. Other canopy manufacturers use PVC, due to its incredible strength and longevity for use. However, Polyethylene, a more economical option for tensioned fabric material, is sometimes used instead.
Specially designed to block 70 percent of the sun’s rays, WeatherPort’s SunShades offer greater protection and reduced heat than standard pop-up canopies or tents. SunShade canopies are suitable for almost any outdoor application, from farmers market booth coverings to backyard patio canopies. This canopy is more durable than sun sails, while offering the portability that an awning or patio roof cannot.
As a six-sided canopy, our hexapae structures are more circular than the octapae design, but just as versatile and long-lasting. This canopy design style is useful for almost any outdoor canopy application, while providing critical protection from the elements and harmful UV rays. All WeatherPort canopies are incredibly easy to set up and tear down, making transport quick, simple and economical.
Depending on your needs, some factors will be more important to you than others. For example, there is often a trade-off between tent weight and sturdiness. Generally, sturdier tents are also heavier tents.
All the above canopies combine the best features. They are well-made, durable, and easy to setup, functional, waterproof, and stable. They come in simple designs for easy setup, can be used in many situations including weddings, outdoor parties, and are fit for the patio, lawn, garden, backyard, and park. After careful consideration, we believe the Generic O-8-O-4292-O x ft canopy is the best.
It’s the easiest to setup, has good coverage, looks very elegant, and also remains stable even in relatively strong winds. It also ranks high in regards to waterproofing, UV resistance, easy maintenance, and quality shelter. With this canopy, your wedding or any other function will be quite memorable.
The Kingpin hates to say it but sometimes even if you pay a pretty penny for your event tent, it doesn’t guarantee that you will get a primo product. Checking out great tent products on this site is one thing, but ordering one on your own online can leave you exposed to some bad deals here and there…
Thankfully, as long as you know what you’re looking for, you shouldn’t be too vulnerable to this sort of thing. The Kingpin has been fooled once, twice, maybe a half-dozen times, and though it sucked each and every time it happened, at least now you have a super helpful list to use when you’re ordering your own awesome marquee or party tent.
Know your tent fabrics
Most event tents are made of polyester because it is lightweight. However, not all polyester fabrics are durable enough to for use as party tent covers. If the product description does not specify the thickness of the polyester, ask first. You want one that is at least 300-denier thick. It will be more expensive, but you will be able to use your tent more than once.
Pay attention to the poles
Event tents are not camping tents. You want camping tent to be thin and flexible because they are supposed to bend. Event tents, not so much. Event tents are larger and the covers are heavier, so you need you poles to be sturdy. Aluminum is fine if they are heavy gauge; steel is sturdier although they rust. Beware of tents that use plastic poles! Can you spell disaster? If you insist on one of those, then be sure you know where to buy tent poles to replace them when (not if!) they break.
Know what you are going to use it for
If you are buying a tent for one time use, there is really no reason to buy at all. It would be cheaper and easier to rent. Just setting it up and getting it down is more trouble than it is worth, and that is not even considering storage! However, if you intend to use it more than once, then you have to think about the best size to serve your purpose. If you have multiple uses for it but require it to be mobile, then you should buy something that is reasonably sturdy and easy to set up. It is all in the intention, kemo sabe.
Get help to set it up
The bigger the tent, the more help you need. If you have a couple of obliging neighbors, or strapping sons (or daughters, for that matter) then you are good to go. However, if you are all by your lonesome, you could find yourself with a mess on your hands. Make sure before you go the place you know where to buy tents that you have the manpower to set it up. If you just need a small tent, find out where to buy pop up tents and get one of those. That is usually a one-person job.
Color me neutral
It can be tempting to go for bold colors or stripes when ruminating “what tent should I buy” to yourself because they look so attractive. However, strong colors can look really old really fast because when they fade it is so obvious. With the sun and the rain, you can be sure that they will show signs of wear after just a few uses. It would be better to choose a neutral color. They also blend more easily with any color theme.
Material and build
Next thing you would want to take into consideration when picking out your ideal canopy would be the materials and build quality of the canopies. There may be some trade offs and that the name of the game here. But it would be wise to do some comparisons.
Now in the market the pop canopies are made of either of aluminium and steel. The both have their advantages and disadvantages which we will point out.
In terms of the weight Aluminum is lighter than its counterpart. So those canopies with the aluminium frames or legs will be lighter and more convenient to carry out if you want to travel with the canopy. However since its lighter it will be more vulnerable to the harsher conditions.
So if you want something that will hold its own during harsh conditions then it would be wise of you to purchase a steel based pop up canopy.
In terms of the strength of the canopies granted they are manufactured with quality in mind then there will be no instantly difference between the two, however over the aluminium is slightly the weaker links so if you want to use this commercially or often then you would be better off with the steel yet again.
In terms of corrosion both materials are susceptible to corrosion naturally. However in this case the steel base is worse off since its produces rust which is always no good. On the other hand the aluminum would produce aluminium oxide which actually stops the corrosion from getting worse. However as you will notice when we go through the different model manufacturer will sometimes include some anti rust features to protect the canopy from the corrosion.
In terms of prices? well it depends on the market and manufacturers really. There is not set rule but you may be able to spot some trends.
Let’s break it down though.
So to put together a rig, you have to get components: a harness/container, a reserve parachute, an Automatic Activation Device (AAD) and a main parachute. Whether to buy each of these pieces new or used depends on the piece.
Next up: the reserve parachute. For newbies, I always recommend buying a used reserve parachute, as you can save a significant amount of money here, and the benefit of a new reserve isn’t really justified over the cost of a new one. Reserve parachutes don’t get used very often, and even after years, are usually in next to perfect condition. A 10-year old reserve of the same design is the same as a brand new one, it’s just cheaper to buy. Ensure the reserve has less than or so “rides” and is no older than 15-1years old.
Also, ensure it has no holes, patches or repairs, or if it does, make sure the cost is much less, and consider sending it back to the factory to have it checked out first.
For the main parachute, my advice is the opposite to a reserve. I recommend buying a main with as few jumps as possible (under 200 if possible). Buying a new main parachute is preferable, if budget allows. You will use this parachute to save your life 99.9% of the time. Its condition matters. Age isn’t really that much of a concern as much as the number of jumps. I like to make sure a main parachute still has its original lines, because you can tell the number of jumps by the condition of the lines. Trying to estimate the number of jumps on a canopy after a reline is sometimes difficult if the parachute fabric has been kept clean, dry and out of the sun. Another consideration is where the jumps were made. A parachute that was jumped in the summer in Canada or the US Northeast on green grass for only months of each year will be in much better condition than one jumped all year round in desert-like or beach locations. Sand really eats away at the fabric coating and gets into the seams.
If budget is really an issue, then a modern-design (last 10-1years) used main parachute with more jumps is OK too, but make sure to have your rigger take a look and don’t pay too much for it, as it’s not going to be worth as much.
Again, ensure it has no holes, patches or repairs, or if it does, make sure pay much less, and consider sending it back to the factory to have it checked out first.
Select the Reserve canopy first.
Select an appropriately sized reserve. Your reserve should be big enough to not seriously hurt or kill you in the event of an unconscious reserve landing (no flare). This means that your reserve should be sized according to your wing loading on that reserve.
For most people, that means I recommend getting a reserve at least one size bigger than the main you intend to jump. So if you think you want to jump a 150-size main parachute, get a 160 or 170-size reserve, and if you’re a big guy that jumps a tiny cross-braced canopy, you’ll maybe still want a 170-sized reserve (4-times larger than your main). You’ll thank me when you actually need to use the reserve.
Then, pick a main, any main. Well, not really, but decide on the size of main you want to jump. You can pick the type of main later, but decide on size now.
Skilled fiberglass workers are in short supply, especially for some of the less desireable jobs such as lay-up and spraying work which are unpleasant and present health risks to workers. Manufacturers are using many methods to reduce the amount of labour required for fiberglass manufacturing. Whilst these methods address skills shortages and the amount of labour required, it sometimes take huge financial investment (increasing production costs) whilst not necessarily increasing product quality significantly. Having said this, the trend is definitely towards automation in the manufacture of fiberglass bakkie canopy products.
Pacific Breeze EasyUp Beach Tent
This lightweight and compact unit is a good starter piece if you want to unwind and relax on the beach. Despite measuring only 4x inches when packed, the EasyUp beach tent when assembled, gives you a secured area measuring 220 x 12cm and a height of 120cm. This can comfortably accommodate persons where you still have enough space for your personal belongings that is protected from the sun and sand.
The EasyUp beach tent can easily be set-up and taken down in seconds using the EasyUp Hub System. Unlike the older version of tents where the poles are a separate unit from the tent and needs to be manually connected and installed, the poles in the EasyUp beach tent are integrated in the tent itself. Once unpacked, all you need to do is extend and stretch out the poles then pull the draw strings out until you hear a clicking sound. Just imagine you are using a typical umbrella which gives a clicking sound once the canopy is fully extended. The main difference here is you need to tie the draw strings to prevent sudden and unintended folding. After securely tying the strings, your EasyUp beach tent is ready for use.
We highly suggest that you should use the provided stakes giving more stability to the tent in case of strong wind. Make sure to attach the stakes at the allocated loops and pegged it to the sand or ground in a right angle, not directly vertical. If you think that the wind will get stronger, then you might consider filling up the sand pouches located at each side of the tent.
When packing up, just untie the draw strings and push down the poles of the lower hub and the tent will just slide down on its own. The EasyUp Hub System totally eliminates your struggle in setting up and packing back the tent. What is even better with the EasyUp beach tent is you can slide it in your backpack and take it where you want to go as it only weighs 4.pounds. The EasyUp beach tent is not just for the beach but it’s also great for other outdoor activities.
Pacific Breeze EasyUp Beach Tent Deluxe XL
If you are looking for a beach tent that can fit a small group, then this is the one for you. The makers of the EasyUp beach tent has improved its design and developed a tent that is large enough and providing more space. Extending to a floor size measuring 240 x 130 cm and a height of 13cm, this can easily accommodate persons with enough room for your personal belongings and beach equipment.
Since this is a bigger tent and needs more stability, you need to fill the sand pouches; pouches located at each side and one at the back end. Stakes are highly recommended to be pegged to the sand or at the ground for additional strength against strong winds.
Setting up this tent is similar with handling the EasyUp beach tent. It still uses the EasyUp Hub System, wherein with just a pull of a draw string, the tent will set itself in place. The only difference with these two models is that you need to stretch out and locked into position the front poles of the EasyUp Beach Tent Deluxe XL. This is the part where the vestibule can be fully extended giving you more canopy and shade protection.
The only downside of the EasyUp beach tent Deluxe XL is the size when packed as you need it to carry it separately and might not fit your backpack. Also, it weighs slightly heavier at pounds, but other than that, the EasyUp beach tent deluxe XL is still perfect for the beach and other outdoor activities.
This is one of the beach tents that can withstand strong winds. The tent’s sand pouch is designed to be poured with wet sand giving it more weight and stability. Another thing that makes the EasyGo Shelter wind resistant has something to do with its floor matting design. The floor mat covers the whole bottom part of the tent and does not have a flap which extends outside the tent’s frame making it aerodynamic. There is a little wind drag though in the small overhang that goes all the way to the top. But in return, this strain in design will give you additional shade.
What is really interesting in the EasyGo shelter is the ability of its floor matting in heat reduction. Since most of us install our beach tent in direct sunlight, heat will accumulate inside the tent making it super-hot in some instances. With the zinc-coated polyester material of the EasyGo shelter’s floor, it reflects the heat back instead of absorbing it. In effect, the ground under the floor matting will have a maintained temperature and some had claimed that they were able to lie down and even got a power nap.
Except for the features previously described, the EasyGo shelter has similar features with other beach tents which can easily be installed and packed up using a mechanical hub system. It can also comfortably accommodate persons while squatting or perhaps you may think of placing a pair of chair inside where you can sit down and have a relaxing view of the beach. The only problem that you might encounter with using the EasyGo shelter is while you are on travel as the whole unit weighs 8.pounds.
What we usually experience with our beach shade tent is that we have this problem of limited space for ground matting and we often buy a separate floor matting just to give us an additional ground space that is free from sand. The Lightspeed Outdoors Quick Cabana Beach Tent Sun Shelter is one of the few, if not, the only product that has a built-in extended floor matting called as the front porch.
What is good with this extended matting feature is that you have an extra space outside the tent’s interior that is free from sand. Instead of placing your chairs inside the tent, you can now place it in the extended matting making more room inside the tent for your personal belongings. Some even claimed that placing chairs on the extended matting will act as a security boundary where dirty-minded thieves will have no easy and direct access to your valuables.
This unit is another member of the super lightweights for beach tents. Just imagine this unit as a portable beach umbrella tent with a long pole leaning on its side plus side fabric covering but without the floor matting. I can safely say this is a fusion of two closely related units: an umbrella and a tent.
Unlike in other beach tent models, the downside of using the Sport-Brella is that it does not come with a built-in ground matting exposing you directly to the sandy surrounding. But what is good with the Sport-Brella is that it provides you with a maximum frontal view as compared to other units where your sight can be blocked with overhangs and canopy attachment.
Lightspeed Outdoors Bahia Quick Pop Up Beach Sun Shade
If you are always on the go and needs a beach tent that is both compact, durable, stable and lightweight, then grab this Bahia model made by Lightspeed Outdoors. Weighing only 4.pounds, this tent can be considered as one of the lightest beach tent units available in the market today.
Being light does not mean that its overall quality has been compromised. It features the same mechanical hub system that easily installs and dismantles the unit. In fact, this unit has been specifically designed to be cool and comfortable. The fabric is made from breathable polyester allowing air to freely gush in to the fabric. It has three huge zippered windows at the side where you can open it for maximum ventilation.
Beach Tents for Babies
So the next time you go to the beach, do not forget to bring your own beach tent. Aside from providing space for your belongings, it also gives you a place to rest without soaking in the sand. Lastly, when you see someone having difficulties settling down their things, do not embarrassed them. Instead, invite them for a shady chat and share with them the benefits of having a beach tent.

Of course a gazebo canopy is mostly used as shade for a seating area. It not only protects friends and family from the sun, but also reduces bleaching and fade on expensive garden furniture and cushions. A hot tub gazebo will protect and prolong the life of the inflatable fabric.
And best of all the pop up gazebo kits we have chosen to review here have price tags that aren’t going to make your eyes water.

This extends the life of your outdoor swing so that you can continue to get years of enjoyment out of swinging in the great outdoors while being protected from the sun and rain by the canopy cover.
The best place to look for a replacement swing canopy cover is from the manufacturer from which you purchased your outdoor swing in the first place. Quik Shade Expedition Instant Canopy
There are so many great models of canopy tents in the market and one of them is the Quik Shade Expedition EX6Its construction and the choice of materials make this one a very viable choice at this price. Quik Shade managed to design a product that’s both lightweight and durable enough for general weather conditions.
The durable 150D top fabric offers solid protection against the sun’s UV rays (99%). For a cooler shade, the manufacturer backed the fabric with a special Aluminex treatment. The opening is made easier due to the plastic reinforced pivot points and thanks in part, to the PTFE washers. The frame is at an acceptable level of durability for the price. It feels a bit flimsy but the stronger thru-bolt construction keeps it well together. The steel frame is also powder-coated to prevent rusting and corrosion.
In terms of color variety the Expedition EX6delivers sufficient options from black, green, and two shades of blue to orange, purple, and red. One slight drawback would be the lack of included stakes for the canopy. This looks like a disadvantage initially but considering how most tents that lean on the cheaper side tend to have low-quality stakes it’s not really an issue. If you camp in very windy areas, buying some weights to keep the tent firmly grounded is almost a requirement.
Quik Shade Expedition EX6is an all-around good quality instant canopy tent. Totally recommended for adding some much-needed shade into your outdoor activities. It’s not without its flaws but for the price you’ve got to pay, it offers a lot in terms of ease-of-use and construction.
AbcCanopy White X EZ Pop up Canopy Tent
For those looking to spend a little more for extra shade, the Abccanopy EZ Pop Up canopy tent with six removable sides and fancy accessories like the roller bag and the four weight bags would be a fitting choice. With many impressive features and very high-quality materials, this will protect you from the sun with more efficiency.
The first thing you should be aware of is the frame. A black powder-coated rust resistant steel one that comes with 100% nylon mold brackets. The square shaped legs are thicker and stronger than the EZ Up Express II. Attention to detail seems to be Abccanopy’s specialty as they integrated a very smooth and safe mechanism for the push buttons sliders. Another aspect worth mentioning is the company’s dedication to keeping all the spare parts stocked for quickly resolving any issues you might stumble upon.
For the canopy’s material, the manufacturer decided on a 500D Polyester with PU lining. It’s guaranteed to be waterproof thanks to the heat sealed seams and is able to offer outstanding protection against the sun blocking 99.98% of UV-A and 99.97% of UV-B. To ease the stress on the points where the peaks poles meet the canopy, a great reinforcement has been added to maintain the tent in good condition for many years to come.
The side wall material is made of 2Denier Polyester with PU lining. Abccanopy added plenty of velcro tabs to bind around frame legs and to connect the side wall to the canopy there’s a big 2” velcro provided. You can mix and match however you like the side walls and to join them together you’ve got some handy zip connectors.
The package for this canopy tent is completed by a heavy duty wheeled bag which comes with wheels placed on a steel axle for increased sturdiness. Considering the included four weight bags, one-half wall and a screen wall that are also added to the kit, it seems Abccanopy’s tent has all the qualities for an unrivaled outdoor experience. The premium price is actually justified if we analyze all the value provided in this bundle so no matter what, you definitely get your money’s worth with this one.
Who this is for
A canopy tent is a purchase most regular car campers consider after stocking up on the basics. After all, you can find plenty of smaller and less-expensive items to help you fight bugs, guard against the sun, and shrug off rain. However, if you love camping but hate worrying that you’ll be making and eating your morning pancakes in the rain—or in a swarm of mosquitos—a canopy tent that protects you from the trifecta of bugs, sun, and sudden showers (within reason) could provide the shelter you seek.
Our second trip, in early March, was to the oceanside Sycamore Canyon Campground (PDF) near Oxnard, California, where we encountered mild temperatures in the 50s and 60s. During this trip, we experienced a light dinnertime rain that had us cooking and eating under the canopies, a pelting early-morning downpour, and violent wind gusts that sent all of our picnic shelters hurtling into the nearby woods—the best testing conditions we could have hoped for! A later check of the weather at nearby Point Mugu Naval Air Station confirmed top recorded wind gusts of 40 miles per hour. We later used the shelters on group trips at Wheeler Gorge Campground near Ojai, California, and at the La Jolla group campsite at Point Mugu, as well as on a trip to the El Mirage Dry Lake in the Mojave Desert.
In between trips, we turned a neighbor’s large, flat yard into an ad hoc camping-gazebo testing ground. We erected our shelters just in advance of a 24-hour rain and checked for leaking and rainy-day ambience midstorm. We also timed how long it took for one person to set up each shelter and how long it took for one person to break each structure down and get the tent back into its bag. We repeatedly zipped and unzipped doors and windows, looking for annoying snags.
Removing Hard Lid Covers
Hard lid covers (tonneau covers) are not as easy to remove as you might think. A hard, fiberglass, painted-to-match lid is actually quite heavy, and depending on the brand or style, it can be a little tricky to take on and off.
Painted-to-match Leer covers are about the same in weight.
Another good painted fiberglass lid brand is the Gaylord cover, and their mounting systems have a lot of flexibility for fine adjustments.
The Easiest Lid to Remove
Probably the easiest lids to remove are the non-painted, black hard covers, such as the Undercover brand. They weigh less than half of the painted fiberglass covers, but they are also just as strong. They tend to fit great and are very easy to install.
I found that their cover on the new Tacoma beds were extremely simple to install. Professional installers can get them on in about 1minutes or less. It’s no surprise then that removing these and re-installing them is just as simple.
Since they weigh about 50 lbs. (less for the extra short mini-truck beds) and they aren’t painted, taking it off and propping it against a wall in your garage takes about ten minutes and you won’t have to worry about scratching it.
True, these covers don’t look as good as the painted ones, but they are very functional, secure and strong. Older style covers, like the old Protecto Tops, were very flimsy, and could be broken in half like snapping thin plywood.
The newer Undercover lids are also very reasonable in price, and don’t pay too much for labor if you get one of these installed, because believe me, even someone who is mildly handy could put one of these on by themselves.
You may also consider a rolling cover. They roll up out of your way into a canister in the front of the bed, and you don’t have to remove it. But remember, more moving parts means more that can go wrong over time.
It may work great when you first get it, but give it a year or two and it may need some occasional adjusting, or sometimes a lot of regular adjusting.
Roll covers also take up bed space, and they are notorious for leaking. That’s why most of them come with drain tubes. A good, secure cover is the Pace Edwards Full Metal roll cover. It costs almost as much as a shell, but they are designed well, and have few problems.
Yes, truck caps or shells have many optional features. The most common is the inside carpet lining. Most shells have this, that is to say most dealers will stock tops with this option and many models actually come with this option included.
Is carpet necessary? No, not really, it just looks much better than the raw fiberglass, and it helps to insulate the shell better. The carpet is like speaker box carpet, and it’s indoor/outdoor grade, so it won’t get mildewed if it gets wet.
The front of a top usually has a sliding window, so the inside of the now covered bed can be accessed from the truck’s rear cab window-provided your truck has a rear sliding window. Solid windows are usually standard, but you would only want that if your rear cab window is solid as well.
An option for that front sliding window in the shell is to have one with the capability to fold down, or in the case of Leer, it can be removed.
Why is this a good option? Because cleaning the rear cab window once a shell is installed becomes quite a chore without it.
The gap between the truck bed and cab is very tight, especially now since trucks have more streamlined designs, and if you want a nice custom look, the shell has to fit this way. Fold down glass is also available with solid windows as well, for the same reason.
Folding Front Slider Option
As you can see, with the front slider dropped down and out of the way, cleaning the cab window is a lot easier.
Don’t get a boot. This option is still offered, but I highly, highly recommend not getting it. They leak, they rub off all your paint, they don’t last and the list goes on. With folding front sliders now available, they really aren’t necessary.
Racks on top of shells are also common options. The best thing to do is to order the shell with the tracks pre-installed. Either Thule or Yakima tracks are cross-compatible, and even if you’re not sure what specific type of rack you want, you at least now have the option to install the towers and bars on the tracks after you get the shell.
You may even have these parts already and want to transfer that system to the shell. Tracks also give you the option to vary the spread between the bars. They can typically hold about 16lbs. I only know of one shell manufacturer that offers the option to have the roof made thicker to accommodate extra weight, and that’s SnugTop.
Do Your Research
The key is to know what fits what. Full size Chevy beds for example:198will fit up to 1998, and some 99s. 2000 up to 200Chevy beds are also the same, despite the body style changes. The 200model is different than all of them.
Simply measuring the bed though will not always be enough to know if the used shell you’re looking to buy will fit. This is because most truck beds are now tapered, meaning the bed is wider in the front and narrower in the back.
Chevy started doing this in 88, Ford in 9and Dodge in 9The new full-size Dodge truck beds are so tapered in fact that lumber racks on these beds don’t seem to fit until you push the rack all the way forward.
Try It On
Setting the shell on the bed is the best way to determine if it will fit. Remember that even if the shell appears to fit, if the rear door doesn’t open and shut right, or lock, what’s the point of even having the shell on the bed.
Some dealers also offer close-out shells, because truck bed fits have gone through so many changes over the last five or six years, they may still have a top in inventory that they would love to get rid of.
Fans come in many diameters and the bigger your room, the bigger the fan you need to maximise its effect. For a bedroom of up to 1square metres, 112cm should be about right; for a living space of 3square metres, you’ll need 132cm or more. The optimum ceiling height is between 2.1m and 2.4m so if you have higher ceilings you’ll need an extension rod. Make sure the blades have plenty of room to spin – at least 60cm from walls (or sloped ceilings).
Most fans have four blades but you can get three or five. That’s purely down to aesthetics as more blades don’t mean more breeze. Most are wood, but some are stainless steel, aluminium or plastic. Fans with wooden or plastic blades tend to be quieter so, if you’re shopping for the bedroom, think on. You can also buy fans with blades that are reversible (white and natural timber for example) so you can switch them over if you fancy a change.
Some fans look amazing, from the industrial look to a sleek contemporary style with built-in lighting. If you want to make a statement, you can pay a lot of money for something that’s a sculptural work of art as well as a cooling device. Or you can choose one that’s so simple, you barely notice it’s there.
The canopy is the part where the fan affixes to the ceiling. A ‘bell’ canopy looks like an upturned bell and is generally found these days in cheaper fans, as the smart buyer has turned to the ‘cathedral’. A cathedral canopy is so called because it was designed to be hung from an angled ceiling. This kind of fixing allows the fan to find its own centre of gravity, solving the problems of rattle and hum.
By law, a qualified electrician has to install a ceiling fan because DIY and electricity do not make good bedfellows. (Remember to ask your sparkie for a certificate in case you need to make a claim on the warranty.) Something I’ve seen a few times is electrical interference from increasingly complicated circuitry. This might be anything from high-pitched humming to lights turning themselves on. That’s another reason to seek professional help.
