water slides for backyard Buyer’s Guide

If you keep the before points in mind, you can easily go out to the market and buy water slides for backyard, right? No!

Composition

One of the simplest water slide is composed of a water pump which pumps the water to the altitude of the slide. Once the water reaches the desired altitude, it is then allowed to flow freely from top to bottom within a slide. The continuously running water through the slide reduces the friction to almost zero level. The sliders sit on top of slides with the water running beneath them on the surface of the water slide. They release themselves on a count of three and allow their bodies to slide freely on the slide’s surface till they reach the bottom where they are embraced by cool water in a pool. Sounds pretty amazing! Isn’t it? Of course it is one hell of fun once you set your foot in a joy land where you can find such amazing recreational spots to get yourself comfortable with.

Apart from the assembly stated above, there are lifeguards which are installed at the start and bottom of the round funnel through which a slider makes his way from top to bottom till he is into the water.

Inline Tube Slide

There is another type of water slide which is totally different to the body slide. It is somewhat considered as a safe slide because it requires a total of 3-persons to sit in a specially designed plastic sofa with grippers installed at the front. If you are going to a water part along with your little angels, better try this one as it will give both you and your child, a pleasurable water slide experience. There are 2-sliders created inline. These slides include lots and lots of twists and turns and some even rotate you to a 360-degree angle.

The Aqua Loop

In 1980’s, the very first water loop was installed in a park located in New Jersey. This water slide faced many confrontation issues by the city government of Vernon and had repeatedly need to close due to safety concerns. After observing the loopholes which were identified in the water slide, an Austrian manufacturer came forward and manufactured the world’s first safest and most amazing water slide which was introduced as the Aqua Loop.

The designing team of the company named as Aquarena put in their best effort to come up with a formula which will increase the thrill by lowering the chance of any unforeseen event. Which is why, their engineering department suggested that the loop is made should be inclined rather than that of a standard vertical one. The largest collection of Aqua Loops has been installed at the Wet’n’Wild Water World Park located in Australia. Total of about loops have been installed there which are featuring the best ambiance and best fun experience to all those who visit the place.

This is because once they are in the water, they end up having to do the same thing they did the day before. An inflatable water slide changes all of that. They are shallow, so parents do not have to worry as much about their child playing on it and many of them offer a variety of activities to keep young body’s active. Unvented water systems have a hot water cylinder which is directly fed from the mains supply, without the need of a cold water tank. The water is heated by a boiler or immersion heater and has a strong pressure as it is coming directly from the main supply.

Cold mains supply

If you don’t have stored hot water or don’t want to use up the hot water when you shower, you can fit an electric shower to the cold mains supply. With an electric shower, the water is heated automatically when it’s switched on which means you don’t use up any hot water stored in a cylinder.

Mixer showers

Mixer showers take both hot and cold water and blend them together for the desired showering temperature. They have three different temperature controls. With manual control, your shower temperature may vary depending on changes to the incoming water supply.

Pressure balancing mixers compensate for an imbalance in pressure between the hot and cold water supplies, providing you with a stable showering temperature. This is particularly useful for combination boiler installations which often have imbalances between the hot and cold supplies.

Thermostatic mixer showers are great for families with young children or the elderly as they monitor the incoming water temperature and adjust it to provide a comfortable showering temperature.

Mixer showers are ideal if you have lots of stored water from a combi boiler or large hot water cylinder and generally provide a faster flow than electric showers. If your home has a low pressure system, you can install a pump to increase the flow for a more powerful shower.

Power showers

Power showers require a supply of both hot and cold water, which is then blended to the optimum temperature. They’re designed for low pressure gravity fed systems and are available in manual and thermostatic versions. Power showers have an inbuilt pump so are able to significantly increase the flow rate from a gravity fed system.

Power showers are a great option if you have low water pressure in your home but they can use a lot more water. This is important to consider if your home has a water meter or a small supply of stored hot water.

Electric showers

This type of shower needs a mains cold water supply only and heats water on demand. An element within the shower heats the cold water as it passes through the unit to the shower head, so it doesn’t use up any stored hot water. There’s no pump involved, so the amount of water will depend on your mains water pressure.

Ideal for families, electric showers are economical to run as you only heat the water you need, and they’re the only type of shower that’s independent of the hot water system, so if your boiler fails you can still have a hot shower.

The higher the kilowatt rating, the more powerful the water flow is – even at higher temperatures. This will usually range from between 7.5kW and 10.8kW. It is recommended to consult a qualified tradesperson when installing an electric shower as the size of the electricity cable feeding the shower will need to be assessed.

Digital showers

Digital showers allow you to set the right temperature and flow of your water from a control panel. If your shower has a wireless remote control, the control panel can be located within a metre radius of the shower which means you can turn the shower on and wait for it to warm up to the desired temperature before getting in. You can also pre-programme the water temperature to suit your personal preferences, giving you complete control.

There are two different types of digital showers: a low pressure variant which has an inbuilt pump as part of the valve and a high pressure variant. Which type of digital shower you choose will be dependent on your water pressure and system.

A processor box is connected to the shower’s controls though a wireless remote control and blends the hot and cold water supply to the required temperature using a digital thermostatic mixing valve. Water is delivered to the shower head through the riser rail, celling or wall, so there’s no pipes on show. The processor box can also be hidden so it isn’t on display within your bathroom.

Thermostatic temperature control

A thermostatic shower provide a constant water temperature, which isn’t affected by the use of other household items. This prevents spikes in temperature which could lead to scalding. Manual temperature control showers do not have this.

From clear and patterned to 3-fold and 4-fold, our range of shower screens offer great protection against water spray.

Boost the water strength and overall performance of your mixer shower with a pump. A pump is used to simultaneously boost hot and cold water supplies so you can enjoy a more powerful shower.

Traditional Round

The round trampoline is by far the most common model, and that isn’t merely a coincidence. The round shape offers an even level of spring distribution, which means a softer bounce that rectangles or ovals. Have you ever tried to do a trick on one and fudged the landing? The more elastic bounce is wonderfully forgiving and makes a world of difference when coming back down from midair.

Couple the softer nature with a shape that redirects jumpers towards the center and you have the safest of all the models available. That’s the real reason why most family homes feature the round trampoline. If the main purpose of the trampoline is for your family to have fun, then sticking with the traditional shape offers everything you’re looking for in a compact and safe design.

The last benefit a round model has to offer is its pricing. Since these are the most popular option, that means they have the highest demand on the market. Competition between companies to put their round trampoline in your yard means lower prices, sales, and more money in your bank account at the end of the day.

Round models can come in sizes as low as seven feet in diameter for tiny tots all the way up to 1feet, generally speaking. Having an extensive range of sizes is one more factor to consider.

If your answer to “Who Is Going to Use It?” was an older demographic than children or multiple people, then the size of the oval might be more appealing to you. The larger surface allows for more room to pull off neat tricks like front flips and back handstands. It’s also easier for teens and adults alike to just bounce around without worrying about bumping into the netting on the side.

Now, the spring distribution might not be even on an oval model, but it will still redirect jumpers back to the center. Just like the round model, that means a safer experience overall. The landings might be a little tougher, but it isn’t something teens or adults will notice.

Ovals are measured in length times width. Every company’s model varies, but you can expect something around x 1feet for the diameter of the mat.

A square model is ideal for the active jumper, the daredevil, and hotshot who loves to try new tricks. The shape offers more jumping area than a round model of the same size, thanks to added space in the corners while helping a jumper bounce higher at the same time. If you are hunting for a trampoline that screams fun, this is the size you are looking for.

This model is better suited for older children who will grow into it and love staying active. It is also perfect for teens and adults who just want to have fun but certainly made for anyone crazy about jumping on a trampoline.

The last benefit a square unit has to offer is the ability to make the most of your yard space. They can easily be fit into a corner, and make arranging other lawn décor around them a little simpler.

Sizes are going to vary with this option, too. However, they will all be measured the same way the oval models were.

Rectangular

Ah, the top choice of the athlete! The rectangular trampoline is utilized by sports players and gymnasts all around the world. Their immense size allows for the freedom needed to pull off tough tricks while the shape offers the most even bounce, so you know that your training is working and it isn’t simply the trampoline helping you reach your goals.

Once again, this shape will help you utilize yard space, but it’s the construction that sets these apart from the rest. A rectangular trampoline is made to take a beating with strong, durable construction from the legs all the way up to the tips of the frame. If you have an athlete in your home, then this option is a no-brainer.

On the Water

Remember when we asked if you wanted to use yours in the water? Well, sticking a regular trampoline in a pool or lake doesn’t quite work out. If you’re looking to have fun on the water, then you need to get a water trampoline.

A water trampoline is mostly a giant raft with a bouncy mat in the center, making it perfect for anyone looking to pull off the ideal cannonball or just have a little extra fun. Typically, these models are too large for a swimming pool, which means they’ll need to be placed in a lake.

If you happen to have one on your property or enjoy family trips to a cabin on a nearby lake, then this might be the most fun option out there. Plus, several come with inflatable add-ons like slides or bouncers to add an extra level of fun into the mix.

A Few Key Features to Consider

Every company offers a few different features, some specific and others optional, that you’ll want to consider. For instance, your children might benefit from a ladder for their new outdoor trampoline. While things like safety nets are a must for any outdoor model, these are some of the features to take into consideration that aren’t always as obvious.

SpringFree

SpringFree offers, you guessed it, the springless trampoline. If safety is your number one concern, then this company has you covered. The creator of this fun device spent years of research and design to fix the flaws of the traditional trampoline.

Some owners do say that you can’t jump quite as high and the price tag is steep on this one. However, the extra peace of mind these units offer is well worth it to several parents. These come in a variety of shapes and sizes.

Rave Sports

As you might have guessed, this company makes an excellent inflatable trampoline that blows the competition out of the water. Corniness aside, Rave is well known for producing high quality water sports gear. You can’t go wrong with these guys whether you’re buying a trampoline or a paddle board.

Let’s start with pool slides.

Over the past years, Pool Slides have gained a great deal of popularity in the backyard pool. Before, when you went to someone’s house to swim and they had a pool slide, yeah, most likely they had it made. Now however, slides are much more affordable, more available and easier to install by yourself with the help of a friend.

Pool Slide Location Selection

Choosing the correct location for a pool slide is very important. This is a safety issue since you don’t want anyone come zipping down the slide and smacking a body part into the hard pool bottom, or a wall that comes up too fast.

Size of Flock

Roosters Many times roosters are not allowed because they are the ones to make noise. A hen is pretty quiet unless there is a predator or she lets out a cackle as she or another hen lays an egg.

Shelter and Protection

Chickens are quick to be picked off by predators. Hawks, owls, skunks, foxes, coyotes, raccoons, and dogs are common chicken predators. While coyotes may not be common in your neighborhood, dogs and raccoons can easily sneak into the backyard and kill chickens.

A coop needs to be secure to provide a place for chickens to escape these predators. This safe place can also include underneath the coop, which provides shelter from overhead. We’ve seen a red-tailed hawk swoop into our chicken run. The chickens that didn’t have time to run into the coop gathered underneath. Raccoons can reach into the coop through windows, so make sure your windows are covered with chicken wire or screen small enough to keep their arms out. A raised coop off the ground on a frame offers protection from animals that approach low, like dogs and skunks.

Beyond predators, chickens need protection from the climate. Chickens are pretty versatile in regards to climate. In summer months, they spread their wings, pant, dust in the cool dirt, and find shade to lower their body temperature. In winter months, they will huddle together for warmth. They don’t like rain, and will take cover as it starts.

Food and Water

Chickens, too, need fresh water at all times. There are a variety of waterers for chicks and chickens, and will depend on your size flock as to what kind of waterer you’ll need. With larger flocks it’s convenient to have a 3-gallon waterer that automatically refills the watering tray. If you live in a cooler climate, you might want to invest in a heated waterer or a heated mat. Regardless what kind of waterer you choose, make sure they’re easy to clean. Chickens will poop in their water. In fact, they’ll poop everywhere.

Chickens eat laying feed. It can be in pellets or scratch. Pellets go into feeders and scratch is thrown out for chickens, often twice a day. We use pellets in an automatic feeder because it saves us time. Chickens can also eat your vegetarian food scraps. Unfortunate for your compost pile, but the chickens love fresh food and garden scraps. Some chicken farmers offer oyster shells for their chickens. Oyster shells are rich in calcium and make for harder eggshells.

Note about food and water for chicks: Chicks will require a smaller waterer and starter feed. The smaller waterers are inexpensive, so it’s okay if you do not use them long. If you try to use a larger waterer, they can get wet, lowering their body temperature to an unsafe level for them. There’s a reason for chick accessories.

Again, check your city ordinances because they may have requirements on chicken coops. Some backyard chicken farmers will argue they need more coop space. What chicken farmers know is that chickens like their space. Crowded chickens make unhappy chickens, and they can start pecking each other.

Setting Up the Coop

You can build your own coop or renovate an existing garden shed. But, the easiest type of chicken coop is one that comes preassembled like the Fully Assembled Amish Chicken Coop.

Consider where the chicken coop will be located. Does the city require the coop to be within 1feet of your property line? Do you want the coop near the garden? Do make sure the coop is in a well drained area so it’s not damp in the coop or the chickens are standing in water while outside the coop.

Climate

Consider your climate when selecting a chicken coop. If you get a lot of rain or snow, you may want to a raised chicken coop instead of a chicken tractor. The raised coop not only gets them off the damp ground, but also allows dry ground underneath the coop from rain or snow. If you live in a warmer climate, make sure the coop you choose has great ventilation.

Chicken Run

Chickens, generally, will not hang out in the coop. They go into the coop to lay eggs, drink and eat, and to roost at night. The outside run is an important feature to the coop. If you have a garden, you’ll want a chicken run so the chickens don’t eat your garden produce and plants. They love pea plants, so unless you plant some for them, you’ll want a chicken run.

Chicken tractors or portable coops, like the Mobile Chicken Coop with Pen and Wheels, come with an attached chicken run. Building a chicken run isn’t a big deal and you can even buy portable chicken fences.

Access Doors

The coop needs access doors to the food, water, and nesting boxes. You’ll want to make sure there is a door that allows you to easily get to the coop to clean it. A clean coop is essential for healthy birds. Here’s a helpful resource on chicken health from the USDA.

We listed the space requirement in Step of the guide. But, here is the breakdown small, medium, and large coops that will make it easy to shop our coops by the size of flock you are interested in raising.

Our selection of small chickens coops can house 2-chickens.

Perches

Chickens will naturally roost at night. As it gets close to dark, chickens will go into the coop and hop onto the perches for the night. Chickens will need about 6-inches of linear space per chicken to roost. Bantams will need about 6-inches. You’ll notice in the winter months, the chickens will move in close together on the perches and in the summer they will need their space. Make sure there is enough linear space for them to spread out a bit in the summer to regulate their body temperature.

Ventilation

Chicken coops should have proper ventilation, preferably at the top of the coop. Air circulation at the top of the coop allows for ventilation without drafts. Also, windows are helpful if they can close to prevent drafts.

Chickens need light within the coop. Their laying cycle depends on the length of the day. Don’t be surprised if your chickens stop laying eggs during the short winter days. You can help chickens maintain laying eggs by making sure your coop has windows or hanging a light so they think the days are longer.

Durable

We’ve talked a great deal about the structure and properties of a chicken coop. But, keep in mind to make sure it is built from quality materials. Chickens will lay up to two to four years of age, so they are an investment. Your structure will need to last. Paint or stain on the chicken coop will protect it from weathering.

We’ve found our chickens became pets. They’ve gone down slides with children, they’ve attended picnics, and they’ve ridden in bike baskets. While some chickens may not come when called, they can easily be integrated as part of your backyard, fertilize your lawn and garden, and give you tons of eggs. You’ll want their housing to protect them and last. It’s an investment to your flock. Whether you build or buy a preassembled coop make sure you’re going to want to look at it daily and it’s going to last.

Pull Quote

If you only measure one dimension, make it width—that’s probably the limiting factor for what will fit in your kitchen.

Depth can be a factor if you have a kitchen island or a galley-style kitchen, where you might need a shallower fridge (or at least a fridge with half-width doors that won’t bonk into a fixture when they open completely).

Height can matter if you need to slide the fridge in beneath cabinets, but usually it’s the least-important dimension.

Paying more for a fridge (up to a point) does get you extra capacity, style, and convenient features like an ice maker or shelving flexibility. As best we can tell, paying more does not guarantee reliability, longevity, quiet operation, or better food preservation.

But you can get all kinds of different features, finishes, and designs if you’re willing to pay for them. It’s up to you to decide if you want to spend extra for, say, a black stainless finish that’ll serve as the centerpiece for your super-modern kitchen, or a hot-water dispenser that can make K-cup coffee, or a door-in-door design.

While you’re shopping, remember that fridge prices can swing by hundreds of dollars in just a few days, particularly if you’re shopping at Sears. Keep your eye out for promotional deals—you shouldn’t have to wait more than a couple of weeks for one.

Efficiency

Use the yellow Energy Guide sticker as your reference. The blue Energy Star badge is awarded to so many big models that it’s practically meaningless, yet isn’t awarded to some super-efficient top-freezer refrigerators.

User reviews and Consumer Reports are your best sources for figuring out if a fridge is loud or grating or otherwise obnoxious. We’ve only recommended models with Very Good or better noise scores at CR that weren’t regularly criticized in user reviews.

That said, it’s tough for anyone to guarantee you’ll personally be comfortable with a given fridge. Compressors all hum and whine at their own unique frequencies, and it’s tough to tell which combinations might drive certain people nuts but be totally cool for others. (We run into this same problem every summer when we review air conditioners.) And you can’t learn much in a showroom because the environment is too loud and the compressors are rarely turned on. If you’re the type with sensitive ears, best of luck to you.

Ice maker

Consumer Reports has found that refrigerators with automatic ice makers are more likely to need maintenance than fridges without ice makers. Based on user feedback, common problems include cracked water lines and dispensers that freeze themselves shut.

Door dispenser

Ice and filtered water direct from the fridge is just the best. The downsides are that a dispenser usually adds hundreds to the cost of a fridge, and the ice maker takes up valuable space in the refrigerator, and it’s one more finicky feature that might need to be repaired. But if you think that’s all worth the near-magical level of convenience, go for it.

Climate control and food freshness

Don’t get too worked up about this. Does lettuce wilt faster in some fridges than others? Or do blueberries mold quicker? Or do venison steaks get freezer burn sooner? Sure. But the huge majority of fridges do their job just fine. The small variance in performance makes so little practical difference that it’s not really worth obsessing about or paying extra for.

The competition

If you’re shopping at Sears, check out the Kenmore 7041It has a larger capacity than the Whirlpool and a neat control panel. The user reviews can be rough, though, and several cite problems with the cooling system and related customer-service dickery (though ratings at Sears tend to be harsher than at other retailers’ sites, and the quality of your service depends on your local Sears branch).

At this price, you can pick from tons of 36-inch-wide side-by-side fridges. Most of them even have through-the-door water dispensers. The GE GSE25HGHWW and Frigidaire FGHS2631PF are both well-liked. The thing is, though, they’re side-by-sides. If you know that’s what you prefer, great. But if you want to be able to fit giant pizzas in the freezer or big platters in your fridge, this isn’t the style for you. French door fridges outsell side-by-sides about to these days, even though they’re more expensive, so take that for what it’s worth.

Care and maintenance

The first step to a trouble-free fridge is buying it from a dealer with a good reputation that you feel will be responsive if you have any problems during the warranty period. They’re responsible for delivery and installation, and if those are mishandled, it can cause problems with the fridge from the get-go. And if you do end up with a faulty fridge, a good dealer tends to be able to resolve the problem much faster than the manufacturer’s customer service—even if you’re under warranty.

As far as a DIY maintenance schedule, we like the advice the Repair Clinic publishes. Their suggested best practices include cleaning your condenser coils, wiping down (or replacing) the door gaskets, cleaning the drip pan, and replacing the ice or water filter.
