Bully Stainless Steel Oval Step Bars
Tonneau Cover, which features 1-inch thick aluminum sheets to it tonneau cover. Another recommended version is the BAK 2640BakFlip GToyota Tacoma Truck Bed Cover, which folds entirely towards the truck’s rear window. It is also easy to remove the BAK tonneau cover–it weighs only 40 pounds.
Hinged: This type lifts up and is held in place by a support (sort of how you lift up the hood of your car). The Extang Full-Tilt Tonneau Cover is a type of hinged cover, that you can prop up with a strut. But it also allows you to roll it up or remove it entirely. You can find these in remote-control or automatic versions, where the hinge lifts up with the push of a button on your dashboard or a remote control connected to an actuator.
Soft Covers: These are tonneau covers that can be rolled up when you want to uncover the truck bed. Common materials will be vinyl, such as the Agri-Cover or TruXedo Tonneau Covers.
Snapless: There is also a snapless version, where the vinyl tarp attaches to the metal frame by means of Velcro strips. The frame and the tarp are on a hinge and can be propped up in place. These are the least expensive types of tonneau covers–but they will not offer the strength and waterproof features of the hard tonneau covers.
Removing Hard Lid Covers
Hard lid covers (tonneau covers) are not as easy to remove as you might think. A hard, fiberglass, painted-to-match lid is actually quite heavy, and depending on the brand or style, it can be a little tricky to take on and off.
Painted-to-match Leer covers are about the same in weight.
Another good painted fiberglass lid brand is the Gaylord cover, and their mounting systems have a lot of flexibility for fine adjustments.
The Easiest Lid to Remove
Probably the easiest lids to remove are the non-painted, black hard covers, such as the Undercover brand. They weigh less than half of the painted fiberglass covers, but they are also just as strong. They tend to fit great and are very easy to install.
I found that their cover on the new Tacoma beds were extremely simple to install. Professional installers can get them on in about 1minutes or less. It’s no surprise then that removing these and re-installing them is just as simple.
Since they weigh about 50 lbs. (less for the extra short mini-truck beds) and they aren’t painted, taking it off and propping it against a wall in your garage takes about ten minutes and you won’t have to worry about scratching it.
True, these covers don’t look as good as the painted ones, but they are very functional, secure and strong. Older style covers, like the old Protecto Tops, were very flimsy, and could be broken in half like snapping thin plywood.
The newer Undercover lids are also very reasonable in price, and don’t pay too much for labor if you get one of these installed, because believe me, even someone who is mildly handy could put one of these on by themselves.
You may also consider a rolling cover. They roll up out of your way into a canister in the front of the bed, and you don’t have to remove it. But remember, more moving parts means more that can go wrong over time.
It may work great when you first get it, but give it a year or two and it may need some occasional adjusting, or sometimes a lot of regular adjusting.
Roll covers also take up bed space, and they are notorious for leaking. That’s why most of them come with drain tubes. A good, secure cover is the Pace Edwards Full Metal roll cover. It costs almost as much as a shell, but they are designed well, and have few problems.
Yes, truck caps or shells have many optional features. The most common is the inside carpet lining. Most shells have this, that is to say most dealers will stock tops with this option and many models actually come with this option included.
The front of a top usually has a sliding window, so the inside of the now covered bed can be accessed from the truck’s rear cab window-provided your truck has a rear sliding window. Solid windows are usually standard, but you would only want that if your rear cab window is solid as well.
An option for that front sliding window in the shell is to have one with the capability to fold down, or in the case of Leer, it can be removed.
Why is this a good option? Because cleaning the rear cab window once a shell is installed becomes quite a chore without it.
The gap between the truck bed and cab is very tight, especially now since trucks have more streamlined designs, and if you want a nice custom look, the shell has to fit this way. Fold down glass is also available with solid windows as well, for the same reason.
Folding Front Slider Option
As you can see, with the front slider dropped down and out of the way, cleaning the cab window is a lot easier.
Don’t get a boot. This option is still offered, but I highly, highly recommend not getting it. They leak, they rub off all your paint, they don’t last and the list goes on. With folding front sliders now available, they really aren’t necessary.
Racks on top of shells are also common options. The best thing to do is to order the shell with the tracks pre-installed. Either Thule or Yakima tracks are cross-compatible, and even if you’re not sure what specific type of rack you want, you at least now have the option to install the towers and bars on the tracks after you get the shell.
You may even have these parts already and want to transfer that system to the shell. Tracks also give you the option to vary the spread between the bars. They can typically hold about 16lbs. I only know of one shell manufacturer that offers the option to have the roof made thicker to accommodate extra weight, and that’s SnugTop.
Do Your Research
The key is to know what fits what. Full size Chevy beds for example:198will fit up to 1998, and some 99s. 2000 up to 200Chevy beds are also the same, despite the body style changes. The 200model is different than all of them.
Simply measuring the bed though will not always be enough to know if the used shell you’re looking to buy will fit. This is because most truck beds are now tapered, meaning the bed is wider in the front and narrower in the back.
Chevy started doing this in 88, Ford in 9and Dodge in 9The new full-size Dodge truck beds are so tapered in fact that lumber racks on these beds don’t seem to fit until you push the rack all the way forward.
Try It On
Setting the shell on the bed is the best way to determine if it will fit. Remember that even if the shell appears to fit, if the rear door doesn’t open and shut right, or lock, what’s the point of even having the shell on the bed.
Some dealers also offer close-out shells, because truck bed fits have gone through so many changes over the last five or six years, they may still have a top in inventory that they would love to get rid of.
The F-150’s long history started in 194with the Ford Bonus Built, a huge improvement over the previous car-based pickup truck and featured eight models, the F-to the F-This new dedicated truck platform boasted a new larger body with integrated headlights and came equipped with a choice between a flathead V-and a straight-six engine. The next generation came in 195and had an optional automatic transmission for the first time. Ford added “00” to the end of the model name, making the truck the F-100. In 1957, the third generation integrated the cab, front fenders, and hood, introduced the all-new Flareside bed style, and offered four-wheel-drive from the factory for the first time. A complete redesign came in 196with an all-new unibody design that integrated the cab and bed, but that was dropped a few years after its debut for the previous separate cab and bed design. In 1965, an all-new chassis was introduced that lasted until 1979.
In 1967, based on the previous generation, the fifth-generation of the F-150 was introduced with sharper styling, a larger cab, larger V-options, factory installed air-conditioning as a first, and a Ranger XLT trim that was seen as a push for luxury. Ford introduced the sixth generation in 197featuring a new extended cab model, dubbed the SuperCab, and the F-150 nameplate debuted in 197Then in 197the F-Series became the bet selling truck in America. Additional luxury was added with the new Ranger Lariat model, and the “Ford Built Tough” slogan was first used in 197The seventh generation, introduced in 1980, had a completely new chassis and body with a squarer look, new four-speed automatic transmission, and offered more than 150 options for additional comfort. A new diesel V-was offered for the first time as well as electronic fuel injection (EFI) that became standard a year later on certain engines. The eighth generation (1987-1991) carried over the chassis from the previous model and, face-lifted the exterior, improved the interior design, and offered only EFI engines, axing all carbureted engines and three-speeds (in favor of four- and five-speeds).
In 1997, the 10th generation saw a radical redesign of the entire truck and saw the F-250 and F-350 split from the lineup and into its own heavy-duty category. The first Triton engines were introduced with a 4.6-liter V-and 5.4-liter V-as well as the return of the SVT Lightning model with a new supercharged V-In 2000 the King Ranch and Harley Davidson trims debuted along with the Super Crew body style. In 200the Lincoln Blackwood was introduced with a power bed cover, plush carpeting, and split Dutch doors instead of a tailgate. “The do-it-all ’9Ford F-150 sets the new benchmark in versatile transportation,” we noted when the F-150 became the Motor Trend Truck of the Year.

The Latest Generation
The latest and 13th generation Ford F-150 was released for the 201model year, boasting an all-new aluminum body, new exterior and interior styling, a new host of new safety features, a multi-camera parking aid, integrated loading ramps, a rearview camera with trailer hitch assist, and new engines including a 3.5-liter V-and a 2.7-liter EcoBoost V-The 5.0-liter V-and 3.5-liter EcoBoost were carried over from the previous model, but Ford continued to see a gradual shift from V-8s to its EcoBoost V-options. During 201Motor Trend Truck of the Year testing, we noted that we liked the EcoBoost engine and new technology but did not like its real-world economy, wonky shifter, and jittery ride. As work trucks go, Ford’s 2004-200F-150 ranks as one of the best. Vast improvements in the suspension and interior quality mean that even though the truck may take a beating, you don’t have to. And, Ford offers such a dizzying array of models and trims that there is literally an F-150 for just about every need. Bed lengths of 1/2, ½ and 8- feet should meet most needs, although the tall bed walls do make reaching into the bed a bit difficult for all but the very tall. Fuel economy on the Vmodels is at the better end of the full-size pickup truck range, but its power and acceleration are woefully inadequate for most pickup buyer’s needs.
Engines and Performance
Ford offers three engine choices on the 2004-200F-150. The base engine is a 4.2-liter Vcapable of 20horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. EPA fuel economy figures for this engine stand at 1mpg city and 1mpg highway regardless of transmission choice. Next is a 4.6-liter Vmaking 24horsepower and 29lb-ft of torque. Fuel economy for the 2WD models is rated at 13/1mpg, while 4WD models earn 13/1mpg. This engine is not terribly powerful, nor popular. Most F-150s in the higher trim range will be equipped with the 5.4-liter Triton Vwhich makes 300 horsepower and 36lb-ft of torque. This engine is also E8compatible. Fuel economy figures of 13/1mpg for 2WD and 12/1mpg for 4WD are about in line with similar rivals from Ford and Chevy.

Consumer Reports gives the 2004-0F-150 pretty good marks for the 2WD Vand Vtrucks, but slightly lower scores for the 4WD models, namely in the area of driveline and brakes. Some known issues mention on F-150 owner sites include spark plugs that break when being removed, cam phasers problems on the 5.7-liter V8, power window switches that fail, and a leaky third brake light. Some 0models had injector problems for which Ford extended the warranty. Most owners seem very pleased with the F-150 noting its smooth ride, lengthy feature content and good dealer experiences. Many are repeat customers.
Dodge Ram – The Ram offers as many configurations and trims as the F-150, although it has nothing to match the specialty models like the Harley-Davidson. On the flip side, the Ram offers a Mega Cab model with an enormous passenger cabin and a more powerful HEMI Vengine.
Chevy Silverado – The Silverado doesn’t offer the wide variation of models and trims, but it does best the F-150 in power on the Vfront. The Silverado also comes with extras like OnStar and even offers a hybrid model.
Nissan Titan – The Titan comes standard with powerful Vengine and its smallest cab is extended model, meaning you get more truck for about the same price. The Titan also has a number of cool options such as its Utili-Track cargo management system and side-curtain airbags for front and rear passengers.
Auto Trader Recommendations
We like the Super Crew for its added room and comfort. But, if you have a big load to haul, you’re going to need the 8-foot bed found only on the Regular and Super Cab models. We prefer the 200best, but 200and on generally have good reviews and repair histories as well. The most common trim is likely the XL and XLT, meaning you’ll be able to drive a better bargain with so many available.
I’m currently in the market for a pad, So I don’t currently have one. But from all the reviews I’ve read, As long as you put a bike on top, you are able to just toss the pad on without straps and go.I’m sure theres some risk of it flying away, but with the bike wedged there it lowers the risk.
