fishing tackle box Buyer’s Guide

If you keep the before points in mind, you can easily go out to the market and buy fishing tackle box, right? No!

General Consensus

This is your basic tackle box that serves its purpose without any fancy perks. It comes with permanent rows as well as 2dividers to further optimize your storage, which is the reason they state “4-2compartments”.

This tackle box isn’t waterproof, and the material is a standard plastic you would expect on these types of storage items. It’s durable when handled with care, but over time little bumps and scratches will add up, and it will likely break sooner than some higher-end models. The latches do a good job keeping the box closed, but over time they will snap as well.

The dimensions of this Plano tackle box are 1x 9.1x inches, which makes it one of the smaller tackle boxes that you can get. This can be a good or bad thing depending on your preferences. If you don’t have much gear, or you just want to pack the essentials for a couple hours on the water, this is a great little box. If you’re planning to be out on the water the whole day, are going on a trip, or would like to have lots of equipment with you just in case, then it might be a bit too small.

Overall, for the price, this is a nice small tackle box that does it’s job well. The adjustability is a bonus for the price, and Plano is a reliable company with good customer service, so you should be in good hands if anything appears to be faulty. We recommend this tackle box for those anglers who are looking for smaller storage, some spare boxes, or just something really cheap.

KORDA TACKLE SAFE

Although the shallow profile doesn’t cater for larger items such as hooklinks and the like, the brand new Tackle Safe is designed to be used with the new EVA pouches which have just been released.

The magnetic closure is secure and the build quality throughout is first class.

A total of 2compartments vary in size and those in the lid are slightly shallower than in the base.

The finish is the same as Korda’s Rig Safe with an 8ins measure on the lid to help tie consistent rigs and an extremely durable outer.

The unit seals with a nice magnetic seal

I couldn’t wait to empty my old tackle box and fill this one with all of my terminal gear, which I’m pleased to say fit in nicely, with the exception of the larger items I mentioned earlier.

If I could change the Tackle Safe in any way it would be to make the base section just a tad deeper, but that’s quite picky for what is otherwise an excellent tackle-storage solution.

An all-time classic from Fox

However, the Royale box has brought Fox boxes will within the budget of most anglers and is well worth checking out.

There are also a huge range of compartment boxes available separately which fit this and the other Fox System Boxes, so you can always change the way you set yours out if you want to.

It’s massive!

Internal dividers are movable so you can configure it to suit your own tackle and the 10cm depth of the main body will house bigger items as well as smaller terminal tackle.

If you take the kitchen sink and then some, or just like to have everything with you for those ‘just in case’ moments, then the Rig Station has got you covered.

Storage

How much gear will you need to store? Are you planning on just a few hours regularly after work on you favorite stretch of river? If so then you don’t need to be able to carry 4-trays of lures and hooks/weights. All you need is maybe one of the smaller sling packs.

However if you are a bit more adventurous and tend to fish unfamiliar waters regularly or are planning on hiking out into the back country for fishing then you will need to bring a bigger variety of gear. If this is you then one of the larger backpacks that can carry multiple trays and potentially enough food and water for a long day out is the better option.

Comfort

Like any backpack a pack for fishing needs to be comfortable when worn for extended periods especially if it is full of gear. Firstly the pack should distribute the weight evenly across your back and shoulders without any specific pressure point from a strap or it’s shape.

Waterproofing

Having a little extra space than you think you might need is always a good precaution, lets face it most fishermen always bring too much gear “just in case”. The best tackle backpack needs to cover all these points.

SpiderWire Fishing Tackle Backpack

A quality fishing bag from a name you can trust the Shimano Blackmoon is perfect for those longer trips that require a little extra comfort from the design and more durability from the build.

TakleTime Fishing Backpack

The Tackle Time Fishing Backpack sets itself apart from some of the other packs on out list because it is one of the lightest here.

Even the zippers were given some thought as they are corrosion resistant and should stand up to the damp conditions of fishing. It also doesn’t scream fishing backpack so you can use it for other uses too.

Features

The designers went so far as to provide a pack that has a changing mat for when you are changing out of your waders. But they did not stop there, the front has a special compartment for you fishing boots so that they can dry out as you walk back to the car.

It has a really nice thin profile unlike some of the other boxier designs in our fishing backpack review. If you are fishing along a heavily tree lined river you will really appreciate the body hugging silhouette as it has a much lower chance of snagging on a tree.

Calcutta Framed Tackle Backpack

Big on storage and with three lure trays included this is a great value waterproof backpack that has most scenario’s covered. As it’s name suggest the Calcutta has an internal frame so that its shaped is always maintained and will not deform like some other bags. However the frame does add to the overall weight of the pack so best not for very long days out.

This is a fishing backpack which can be used for several types of purpose. This can be used for fishing, hiking, or other personal needs too.

You can use this spacious backpack to store heavy gear, trays or tackle or tackle boxes. There are multiple individual pockets to keep different types of stuff.

If you are into different types of sports including fishing, then this is a good choice for you. Otherwise, you may want to check other backpacks specially designed to keep tackles.

Eddyline C-13Yakattack

The C-13offers the serious kayak fisherman a lightweight alternative to the heavier polyethylene kayaks. Acceleration is quick, and just a few strokes will bring you up to speed. The Cloud seat offers four seating positions, and the hull has been designed to accept a variety of trolling motors, stakeout poles and various aftermarket accessories including a casting bar.

Feelfree Lure 11.5

Feelfree has re-launched the Lure 11.kayak with the new removable Feelfree Sonar and Electronic Pod, designed to offer anglers the option to install fishfinders without having to drill holes. The entire pod can be removed as an all-in-one unit for convenient portability and security. All Lure models come standard with Feelfree’s Uni-Track system, which allows for quick, easy mounting and adjustments of accessories, Wheel in the Keel for easy transport, and an adjustable Gravity Seat.

Feelfree Move Angler

The Move Angler is the perfect kayak for kids and smaller paddlers getting into the sport of kayak fishing. The Move Angler comes equipped with molded-in handles, recessed fittings, and the Wheel in the Keel. Its “tri-hull” design offers great stability and efficient tracking while paddling. Its hull weighs only 4pounds, making it very easy for any solo paddler to maneuver the kayak on or off the water — even a younger paddler.

Old Town PREDATOR XL MINN KOTA

The Predator XL Minn Kota bridges the gap between fishing kayaks, bass boats and shallow-water skiffs. The combination of a Minn Kota motor and a foot-controlled rudder system allows truly hands-free fishing. Work your local shoreline without taking your hands off the rod to reposition your boat.

Engineered above and below the waterline to be the perfect fishing platform, the Predator Family from Old Town has what it takes to target everything from small-pond largemouths to rough-seas stripers. The Predator comes loaded with features including a slip-resistant deck and the Element Seating System. The Predator MX, or Mixed Water, features a slightly more rounded hull, designed for moving water conditions without sacrificing stability and performance.

Perception Pescador Pro 10

Featuring a new removable stadium-style seat with two positions that can be adjusted on the fly, the Pescador Pro provides comfort and stability in a serious fishing kayak. Storage and rigging opportunities include a bow tankwell with mesh cover, a rear tankwell, molded-in rod holders, an accessory track system, a recessed storage area for tackle, and a center console for electronics.

Old Town HERON ANGLER

A sporty design, the Heron Angler is an easy-to-paddle kayak that can maneuver perfectly into your favorite fishing spot. It’s an affordable choice for casual anglers who are seeking a lightweight, compact kayak outfitted for fishing and cruising in calm waters.

Aquaglide Blackfoot Angler ISUP

This rugged inflatable SUP can help you reach your secret fishing spot on your favorite river or in a remote lake nestled in the woods. With six Scotty mounts, the Blackfoot can be outfitted to tackle any angling mission, and D-rings make strapping down a cooler or milk crate loaded with your tackle boxes a cinch. Its 36-inch width can handle up to 450 pounds, and it can be deflated, rolled up, and tossed in your trunk for the ride home.

Forward

Fishing rods come in different lengths and weight, and will offer varying levels of flexibility and strength.  Ask yourself what kind of fish you’re likely to go after.  Shorter rods are often used to catch big game, who can put up a fight and will need a stronger and heavier rod that can carry heavy lures.

However, longer rods enable you to cast further, and let you respond to gentler and more subtle movements from your fish. There are some fly fishing rods that can be as long as 1feet, but can be disassembled to become more convenient to carry around. However, most fishing rods will measure about feet.

Okuma Voyager Spinning Travel Kit

This is a high quality fishing kit that is one of the best fishing rods for its price range. It is carefully designed to offer you both power with convenience. In fact, this is one of the few kits that will be able to impress beginner anglers, weekend warriors and fishing tournament pros alike.

The Okuma Voyager Travel Kit is a complete fishing kit that includes a six-foot graphite composite rod, a cork grip that fits comfortably in your hand, high-quality  ceramic guides, and very durable reel seats, ball bearing system, and spools.

Shimano Baitrunner

The first real player on this scene was the Shimano Baitrunner. It set the industry alight and has probably still accounted for more 20lb snapper than any other product. The technology is based around the secondary drag system. It maintains a controlled free spool as the bait is being taken and then when the handle is flipped the primary drag kicks in. I have always been a fan of baitfeeder set-ups.
