Kyle DunnMy name is Kyle Dunn. I have been a freelance writer for 20 years, focusing mainly on technology related topics. After more than 28 hours of research, including interviewing two experts and spending 10 hours testing 15 popular filter water bottle, I found the best filter water bottle of 2018.

The reviews are compiled through a mix of expert opinion and real-world testing. You see I’m an average member of the public just like you and the main reason I decided to publish a review website on filter water bottle is because I was looking for one not so long ago.

Why did this filter water bottle win the first place?

The product is very strong. Its material is stable and doesn’t crack. I don’t know anything about other models from this brand, but I am fully satisfied with this product. I was completely satisfied with the price. Its counterparts in this price range are way worse. I really enjoy the design. It is compact, comfortable and reliable. And it looks amazing!

Why did this filter water bottle take third place?

I liked the design. We’ve been using it for 2 months and it still looks like brand new. It is inconvenient to use due to the size. I am going to get something different next time. This price is appropriate since the product is very well built. The material is incredibly nice to the touch. It has a great color, which will suit any wallpapers.

filter water bottle Buyer’s Guide

If you keep the before points in mind, you can easily go out to the market and buy filter water bottle, right? No!

Our pick

The Hydro Flask 24-Ounce Standard Mouth is a leakproof, easy-to-open bottle designed to keep your drink cool. It does so by sandwiching an insulating vacuum layer between two layers of stainless steel to prevent outside heat from warming up the interior. Unlike most of the other insulated bottles, the coating and rubber lid make it easy to grip during opening. The mouth is wide enough to make plopping ice cubes into the opening easy, but not so wide as to spill water on yourself while guzzling on a hot day. It’s a pleasure to drink from, as it allows water to flow smoothly into your mouth with no gurgling to interrupt the stream.

The dual-purpose Platypus Meta Bottle can be converted into a cup or collapsed when space is limited. This squishable, leakproof bottle offers a drinking experience that’s as close to that of a hard-sided bottle as we’ve been able to find in a collapsible vessel. Once it’s empty, you can roll it up and stash it away. Its wide mouth and shallow design make it the easiest bottle we tested to use an UV water purifier for when you travel to places where the water isn’t potable.

Pull Quote

Bottles become a traveling billboard of values; for those without a car, it becomes a venue for bumper stickers—a new arena to express personal identity.

Dr. Martha Kaplan, Professor of Anthropology at Vassar College, writes in “Lonely Drinking Fountains and Comforting Coolers: Paradoxes of Water Value and Ironies of Water Use” that water bottles are a reflection of health and the self. By carrying around a water bottle instead of, say, a soda bottle, you’re signaling to others that you care about your body and are on-top-of-it enough to bring a reusable bottle with you and fill it up ahead of time unlike the less responsible folk who have to buy beverages along the way. Bottles become a traveling billboard of values; for those without a car, like city dwellers and college students, it becomes a venue for bumper stickers—a new arena to express personal identity. That is one reason why we review different kinds of bottles—to help find the one that best fits your needs, personality, and style for different circumstances.

The 27-ounce Klean Kanteen Classic is our favorite water bottle for most people. Why drink from stainless steel? Such bottles don’t suffer from the weight issues associated with glass bottles or insulated metal bottles. Many people find they look fancier than plastic bottles. They aren’t see-through, so you can carry beverages other than water without others knowing. Most metal bottles these days, including our pick, come with electropolished interiors to help keep the bottles from taking on the smells or tastes of the liquids you put in them (and vice versa).

The Klean Kanteen’s spot-on proportions are its best trait. The 2¾-inch-diameter base is wide enough to fit into a standard-size cup holder without wobbling. Similarly, its 1¾-inch mouth is just big enough to fit almost any ice cube you throw into it, but not so wide that you’ll spill water everywhere if you try to sip on the go. That was a major problem with both the 1-liter MSR Alpine, which we tested for the first version of this guide, and the ubiquitous Nalgene Wide-Mouth Tritan bottle it’s based on. Another upside to the size of the Klean Kanteen Classic’s opening is that it allows air to flow into the vessel while water flows out of it as you tip it back to drink. This design makes for a strong, steady stream of water with no annoying stops and starts to the flow.

You can accessorize the Klean Kanteen Classic with a number of optional lids to change its look or functionality. At the time of this writing, Klean Kanteen offered six caps on its website: an all-stainless-steel construction option, a non-leakproof silicone sports spout, bamboo highlights, a growler-style swing lock, and even a sippy-cup style for handing the bottle to kids (or for rehydrating while recovering from a particularly harsh hangover).

How much you enjoy the Klean Kanteen Classic depends on which cap you use. Several Wirecutter staffers reported that after a year of use, they found the standard Loop Cap to be difficult to open, especially when driving from one elevation to another. The slightly pricier Bamboo Cap was not only stylish but much easier to open. Testers who had arthritis also found it easier to open. The Bamboo Cap has a metal hook that was easier for our testers to grip and yank on when opening than the Sport Cap or standard lid.

The Klean Kanteen Classic is light, too, which is great since the additional weight of water in your bag is enough to haul around without your having to deal with the added heft of a bulky bottle. While empty, the 27-ounce Klean Kanteen Classic with Loop Cap weighs only 7.ounces, coming in second only to our pick for the best plastic bottle.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

We found that the surface of the bottle was a little slicker than we’d like it to be. If you’re wearing gloves or using the bottle on a particularly hot day when condensation coats its surface, you might find it hard to hold on to. But that’s a complaint you could make about virtually any stainless steel bottle. (A while back, one of our readers suggested that wrapping a few rubber bands around the bottle eliminates this issue; the trick works great.) And while its mouth is wide enough to comfortably drink from and drop ice cubes into, it’s too narrow for you to be able to wash the container without a bottle brush.

Additionally, it can be difficult to push down the spout on the Sport Cap enough so it doesn’t leak. If done properly, it can withstand 1hours on its side without a drop. But if not closed down properly (and, sometimes, it’s hard to tell if the spout is completely closed), it will most likely leak when not upright.

Easy to grip and open

The easiest-to-open bottle we’ve tested, it features a patented thread-free, watertight, airtight, leakproof lid. This elegant, dishwasher-safe bottle stacks in fridges and won’t roll away from you. It doesn’t hold as much water as other bottles, but that can be a plus for those who find the weight of traditional water bottles to be burdensome.

The Design for Living 16-Ounce Stackable Bottle is easier to open and to hold than any other bottle we’ve tested. The threadless lid works a bit like popping a cork. You only give it a quarter twist and it’s locked. There’s no pulling, yanking, or worrying that you aren’t on the right thread. Most importantly—there’s no leaking.

The bottle also comes with hand-sized grooves to help you grip better and prevent slippage. These grooves also improve your ability to open it and carry it around. It doesn’t come in a size larger than 1ounces, but two of our testers who have arthritis told us that anything bigger than 1ounces would be too heavy for them to lug.

The narrow mouth on the Design for Living is a pleasure to drink from, but it makes putting in ice cubes difficult. The bottle is fairly squat, making it easy to wash with a brush; it is also dishwasher-safe.

How we picked and tested

No matter what materials a water bottle is made from, it should be durable, easy to open and use, a cinch to maintain, and leakproof, so that you feel safe tossing it into a bag with your iPad, phone, or other valuables.

Any bottle you buy should hold enough water that you’re not constantly looking to refill it. We decided that 2ounces to 2ounces was a comfortable range to shoot for; that’s enough liquid to keep your thirst quenched for hours, but not so much that the bottle becomes uncomfortably heavy to carry or too big to stick in a backpack. To maintain a healthy level of hydration that’s in line with what the Institute of Medicine recommends (although hydration basically boils down to having light enough pee), you’d need to refill a bottle of this size only four to five times in a day. Because of their material weight, glass bottles typically come in smaller sizes than those made out of steel or plastic. As such, with our glass choices we allowed for some leeway in size, with the cutoff being around 1ounces—the smallest amount we would want for a reusable water bottle. And because drinking warm water sucks, we also favored bottles with a mouth wide enough to accommodate ice cubes.

Choosing which bottles to test wasn’t easy, but our decision to look at more than 60 bottles when we put together the first version of this guide in 201definitely made the task less painful this time around. This year, we tested 1additional bottles against last year’s picks.

Filtration is done by passing the raw water through a filtration sieve, via biological or by using chemical processes. One of the most common filtration methods is by passing the raw water through a carbon filter to make it safe to drink. It should be noted that this filtration method will not eliminate certain viruses or certain chemicals in the water. Water filtration does not ensure that the water is 100% safe to drink.

Water Purification

Purification is done to eliminate impurities from the raw water. While filtration deals with cleaning the water, purification makes the raw water free from chemicals, pathogens and possible bio contaminants. Boiling is an example of a purification method. In the same vein as filtration, purification may not eliminate other types of impurities in the water.

Filtration Effectiveness

Just how fine are the sieves that are used to filter the water? It all boils down to the micron level. The general rule is that a smaller micron level is better at filtering out contaminants than filters that have bigger micron levels. There are some survival water filters that are advertised to have.or.microns, while others say they can eliminate 99.9% viruses and microorganisms.

Convenience

How easy is it to draw and drink water using the filter? Each type has its own pros and cons. For example, the straw type requires you to submerge the device and suck the water straight from the source, while the pump type requires a bit of exertion to use.

Passes EPA Standards

Make sure to check out if a water filtration system passes EPA standards. The Environmental Protection Agency has set a standard that determines whether water is safe for public consumption or not. In short, if a water filter passes this, then it should be safe for you to use.

Outdoors 36Survival Straw Emergency Water Filter

Tap water, ground water, river water, rainwater and even flood water will turn into potable drinking water with the Outdoors 36Survival Straw. The filter may be attached to a 2L bottle and can process up to 1500 liters. The active carbon and high precision micron material make it one of the best portable water filters out there.

Survivor Filter

Survivor Filter has a.0micron UF membrane filter which can effectively remove gardia, protozoa, staph, bacteria and viruses from the water you drink. The carbon-activated filter eliminates heavy metals, odors, chemicals and the funny taste. The pre-filter cotton takes out the larger particles before it hits the carbon filter, ensuring a longer-lasting use.

LifeStraw Mission Water Purification System

The LifeStraw mission comes with all the bells and whistles from a premium water filter system. The high capacity reservoir can be filled up to a maximum of 1or L. The filter sports a hollow membrane and can be easily hooked up to a tree or any similar support. Expect an 18,000 L filter lifespan that churns out potable water at a rate of around to 1L drinking water per hour.

The best water filtration system is the one that specifically caters to all your needs, whether you need a simple filter system on short camping trips or a high-end water filter system for the whole family. It all boils down to preference. A straw water filter works best on solo hikes because of its unbeatable portability, while a gravity water filter system is best for group camping or for large-scale emergency situations.

DrinkSafe Systems Travel Tap

DrinkSafe Systems Travel Tap combines the purifying action of the sterilisation pen and the filtration process of the filtering bottle in one action.

You simply unscrew the lid, fill the water bottle up under a tap or in a stream (great camping water filter!) then screw the lid back on. You can safely drink the water immediately just by flipping the spout and sucking the water through the straw. Do not squeeze too hard on the body of the bottle or tip the bottle. The water needs to travel through the straw for the filtering and purifying process to work.

Another benefit is the quantity of water you can filter with one bottle. The Travel Tap delivers 1200 litres of safe drinking water before the filter has to be replaced. This equates to roughly 300 days for two people.

Criticisms

My only two gripes with this portable water purifier by DrinkSafe Systems Travel Tap are minor. It’s too big to fit under small sink taps, this has been an occasional issue. Also, when you need immediate H20 to get a thirst quenching / hangover remedying gulp, it can be annoying squeezing out a mouthful at a time. Minor, like I said.

What we looked for

Volume/capacity: A bottle that holds at least 500ml, which is roughly a third of what you should be drinking everyday.

Revive H2O

Revive H2O is an all-purpose filter water bottle with a bottle container, screw on the lid with a drinking nozzle and a removable main filter. It works well for a routine process and filters up to 1500 liters. It has an antibacterial carbon filter. This carbon filter removes all the bacteria, plastics, dissolved solids, parasites, and other particles. After filtration, it gives an odour free and tasty water for consumption.

This is light-weight and gives an you extra addition with various choices of sizes. It’s easily carried in your backpack. It’s also available in the form of a squeeze bag and considered to be one of the best water bottle with filter.  It is easily compressed into your pocket and easy to carry around. It works well for children and elders hence Revive H2o is a good water bottle for college, work and travel.

It works well for its competitive price and one of the best filter water bottles.

Nalgene

Nalgene is one of the water bottles manufactured in the USA. It’s been well-known for years and manufactures a range of reusable and BPA-free water bottles. It is commonly used for all purposes and one of the best water bottles for the gym or sports.  Easy companion for pure and instant hydration.

It’s available in bright and vibrant colours which is made of BPA-free Eastman Tritan co-polyester which has great resistance to varying temperatures. You can easily switch between hot and cold drinks. It’s also available in different shapes and sizes according to the customer’s needs.

It has a classic sport cap yet a wide mouth opening which helps in easy consumption. Due to its light-weight and compact nature, it’s easily carried around for the short or long journey and one of the best filtered water bottles for camping.

It’s popular among the filter water bottle reviews. It’s available in varying price ranges and easy to afford.

Keeping things simple is what makes the

Water To Go Filter Bottle System so good – in fact it could even be the best water filter bottle yet.

This filter bottle is available in a 75cl (dark colour) bottle or the clear 50cl bottle, and comes fitted with 1x filter – additional filters are also available to suit, and these filters will sift out 99.9% of microbiological contaminates, and that includes the big one that others do not filter – VIRUSES. Tested to the International Filtration Guidelines, the Water-To-Go bottles passes with flying colours.

Water Filters

The Sawyer Squeeze is just about as light and simple as water filters get (except for the Sawyer Mini). Fill the Sawyer bag with water from a stream, screw the filter onto the top of the bag, and squeeze the bag to filter out clean water. You can also drink straight from the filter or buy a hydration pack adapter kit to drink straight from your water bladder. The squeeze is slightly larger than the Mini and comes with a 1,000,000 gallon guarantee. They both function about the same, but the Mini is a little smaller and lighter. Like pump filters, both squeeze systems can be somewhat tedious for large groups, so you might want to get a few of them. Also, don’t not let them freeze in cold temps or they won’t work anymore.

UV Light Water Purifiers

Cholera- Cholera is a terrible disease that is contracted when drinking dirty water. Some symptoms to start with are diarrhoea, vomiting and bad muscle cramps. This is a disease that can ultimately become fatal if not treated. Over three million people catch this disease yearly, resulting in over one hundred thousand deaths per year. That is a lot of lives wasted due to not drinking filtered water.

Some metals found in our water supplies are lead, copper and mercury to name a few. It happens so regularly that the government in the UK actually have limitations on how much of these metals are actually ALLOWED in our water. To me this is absurd. Private sources of drinking water are not monitored so could contain much higher and dangerous amounts of metals in their water supply. A very good reason to cut these metals out your water by 99.9999% using the best filtered water bottle.

Fluoride

Fluoride is in the water we get straight from the tap, but first, let me tell you that fluoride is poisonous to the human body. Water containing fluoride is said to lower IQ results of people if they are given it as a child. So why do the government actually put it in our water? Another reason to be drinking filtered water.

On the road and camping

And then there’s the design.

That’s it. You do not have to squeeze, pump or suck. It has an excellent flow rate and within 1seconds, you will be drinking normally as if you are drinking from a regular, everyday water bottle.

Even though it is named ‘Ultralight’, it is not the lightest water filtration bottle. The Sawyer is lighter than it. But the Grayl scores over the rest with its ingenious design, incredibly effective filtration and compact size.

When you are done using it or during your treks, you can just hang it on your backpack using a ring that is included in the package or just stow it away in a bottle pocket, also included in the package.

The only nit that we could pick with the Grayl is that the filter has a lifespan of 150 liters only. So, if you are using this for a group of people and filtering 5-liters a day, you will mostly need to replace the filter after a month of use.

Other than that, this is hands down, in our opinion the best water filter bottle in the world now.
