There are a few big “ifs” with this trainer — if you have the latest Mac technology, if you have this much money to spend on a trainer — but if those apply, then you will love the Wahoo Kickr. With Bluetooth Smart and ANT+ connectivity, you can control the resistance on the Wahoo in a number of ways, from the lab-like ergo setting that dials in the exact wattage, to third-party software like TrainerRoad that controls the resistance as you ride preset workouts or courses. Unlike some systems that lock you in to a given company’s software, Wahoo’s open platform design means the training options will just get better. The road feel is outstanding, and the unit folds up nicely for storage.

How to get the most out of your trainer
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions on setting up so that your bike doesn’t move and your tire doesn’t slip. If your budget allows, get a big, powerful fan to keep yourself cool, otherwise your power will drop as the workout progresses and your core temperature rises. It may feel harder as a result but you won’t be getting the full training benefit. Go into each session with a specific plan; just spinning along listlessly is a sure-fire recipe for boredom. For long sessions, look at setting up in front of the TV/DVD player, or at least have some motivational music in your ears.
Key components of a trainer
Clamp and QR: The bike attaches to the trainer via a clamp, which screws over the rear wheel quick-release skewer with a couple of locknuts to keep it in place. Most turbos come with their own skewers, which you should use both for safety reasons and so as not to ruin your own.
Stand: These normally fold out to give a turbo stability. In theory, the wider the legs, the more stable it’ll be. Some have independent height adjustment for uneven surfaces, some lock into place, others just fold out. The feet are typically rubber tipped.
Resistance unit: Wind, magnetic or fluid: these are the main types of resistance. How they ride depends on how well they’re made and the quality of the flywheel, rather than the form of resistance. Wind trainers are generally loud, while magnetic and fluid units are quieter.
Flywheel: A heavy, well balanced flywheel is generally a good thing in a turbo. It helps smooth out the ride so you don’t feel you have to stomp on the pedals just to keep them going, giving you more of a sensation of riding on the road while you’re stuck indoors.
Wahoo’s Kickr is its flagship trainer and it’s seen an update in 2016, making it quieter and more responsive than the previous model. There is also a smaller, cheaper (£499.99) version called the Wahoo Kickr Snap.

Out of the box the trainer is positioned easily thanks to the built-in handle, which is a new feature for the model.
The weighty feel of the Kickr is actually very reassuring, as it feels sturdy enough to withstand even the highest of wattage assaults without shifting an inch – a fact confirmed by the design team.
Setting up a bike in the trainer is remarkably straightforward – simply remove your rear wheel, pop your chain over the Kickr’s (included!) 11-speed cassette and fit your rear dropouts to the included quick release skewer – we’ve had rear wheel changes that have been more stressful.

What we say: Strikingly coloured, the Mag Pro certainly stands out but its build quality backs-up its lairy appearance. Ride feel is particularly smooth and progressive.

What we say: This trainer is so pared down that first impressions have you doubting the B60’s performance, but you needn’t worry. Out of the box it’s simple to get up and running. Think of a bike trainer as being like having access to a spin class, but in the comfort of your own home.
Some people use bike trainers for practice before marathons or competitions, whereas others tend to use it as a substitute for riding outside if the weather is unfavorable. Either way, a bike trainer can provide a high quality workout, and in many cases providers the rider with a more difficult and challenging ride, than riding outdoors.
What to Look for in a Bike Trainer
The intensity of your workouts. If you are a beginner to biking, perhaps a more entry level bike trainer would be best for you. If you are training for more serious races and need precision in your efforts levels, then a more advanced bike trainer with a power meter might be worth the extra investment.
Noise factor. Wind resistance trainers may be cheap, but can be much noisier. Similarly, fluid trainers are relatively less noisy but are far more expensive. If you are working out in an apartment with two roommates, you might need to opt for quiet. If you have a nice workout room that is relatively secluded, your options might be more.
All of these factors, including space to store the trainer, etc., play into your decision of buying a particular bike trainer.

Training videos. In our opinion, these are indispensable and the reason you get a trainer. There are several series of Cycling DVDs out there that will help you get the most out of our workouts. Having a focused training session will turn your trainer session into a spin class. Done right, these will be incredible workouts. You can usually find ones that are anywhere from 30 minutes to more than 90 minutes long, and they can either be in DVD form or streamed to a device or TV. So we’ve bunched the pros and cons of each into helpful categories so you can make an informed decision.
This guide will help you decide on which trainer will best fit your needs.
First, noise level. Even though some indoor trainers are advertised or reviewed as quiet, they all make noise. If you can, try out whichever indoor trainer you’re considering at your local bike shop if possible before purchasing. Your level of tolerable noise may be quite different than the next persons. Remember, a loud trainer may be more hassle than it’s worth and you may end up not wanting to spend much time on it.
Second, how does the trainer feel? The goal is to feel like you’re riding on the road as much as possible. If a trainer doesn’t feel like riding on the road, reminding you of how great it is to cycle, will you use it very much? Chances are no.
As appealing as low cost trainers may be, you should keep those two points in mind when setting out to purchase a trainer. Trainer nirvana is had when you find a trainer that fits your budget, is bearable decibel wise, and reminds you of how great it is to ride your bike. All while helping you stay fit and ready for the upcoming season.
The Mag trainer is the next step up from the wind trainer. Much quieter than a wind trainer, magnetic trainers get their resistance from magnets instead of a fan working against the wind. Mag trainers are considered linear in their resistance level. Meaning the resistance is steady and you could get on one and pedal up to 35-40mph without any change in resistance. Though, some well-engineered mag trainers will give you a varied workout by having some sort of ability to change the resistance, either a dial near the rear or a remote adjustment dial that can be fitted to your handlebar.
This buying guide would be very short and yet still be accurate for most people if we just wrote, “Get a fluid trainer,” and left it at that.
Truth is, the actual best trainer for you comes down to price, noise, and road-like feel. Fluid trainers are typically mid-priced, are among the quietest, and have progressive resistance—it gets harder as you pedal faster and/or shift up—just like on the road.
Any trainer in this category will provide you with years of trouble-free training.

Wind and Magnetic Trainers
If you have a tight budget, there are magnetic and wind trainers available. Wind trainers have good road-like feel with progressive resistance but are very, very noisy. Magnetic trainers can be as quiet as fluid trainers; however, the resistance is liner and not progressive. It can be adjusted on the unit itself or with a shifter mounted on your handlebars.
The RnR II has a massively heavy and bulky lower frame that attaches to the bike and brake mount section, and sits on a large rubber block that allows you to lean as you corner and the whole device to swing during out-of-saddle efforts.
It definitely needs the dedicated swivelling front-wheel mount to naturally correct sideways flop, but it feels surprisingly realistic, particularly when used with a POV ride simulation or race footage. Add a massive flywheel and fluid brake and you’ve got the smoothest, longest-spinning and most natural-feeling trainer here. The £80 inRide pod turns it smart with a reasonably accurate wattage reading plus cadence, speed and other data using the free Kinetic app or other synced software.

How to Use a Bike Trainer

Adjust Your Bike

Indoor Bicycle Cycling Trainer Exercise Stand
It’s a bit noisier than the Magnet Exercise Trainer described above, but it’s nothing a good pair of headphones or earplugs can’t solve – stationary trainers at this price point are rarely quiet anyway.
Magnetic bike stand trainers are perhaps the classic indoor trainer, using magnetism to create drag against your bike wheel and produce resistance. Magnetic trainers are the best mid-range option on the market as well as a great option for beginners.
They are easy to assemble, affordable and provide very satisfying workouts. However, they may not be ideal for serious cyclists who train frequently. The magnetic mechanism is limited in its capacity to create resistance and magnetic indoor trainers aren’t the most durable around, so frequent rigorous training will take its toll over time.
Magnetic trainers are also a little bit noisier compared to their fluid-based cousins, so if you intend to train late at night, they might not be the best options.

The Kinetic Rock and Roll Trainer is definitely the most complete pivot trainer out there at the moment, and seeing as the selection of pivot trainers available is relatively small, it’s the only one we can unhesitatingly recommend.

Pros and Cons of the Mag Trainer
I’m not particularly concerned about the noise produced by stationary bike trainers – I see it as a necessary evil – but if you’re bothered by that kind of thing, Blackburn could certainly afford to make their trainer a little bit quieter. It’s by no means the loudest indoor trainer I’ve tested, but it’s definitely not the quietest ever, so I wouldn’t go using it at full speed in the middle of the night when your family’s asleep. If you pop in some earphones, you can barely hear the whirr of the trainer, so I don’t think it’s a big issue at all.
Firstly there’s the roller trainer, we’ll get this one out of the way first because it may be one to write off for the fearful amongst you. They are simple, and in reality only offer the resistance adjustment via your bike’s gears. The biggest worry for most with rollers is safety, most people will take some time to get used to rollers. Unlike turbo trainers there are no clamps keeping your frame, forks or wheels in place, which means that if you lose balance you’re likely to come off in style. There are advantages though, because you’re essentially riding naturally you will build up bike handling skills, which you wouldn’t on a turbo. Also the feeling is more natural too, just like riding an ultra smooth tarmac road on a perfect weather day. With the lack of adjustment, and the harcore-only usability aspect mean that they’re mainly good for short sessions and warm downs (much like you’ll see after a stage on the pro tour with the likes of Astana’s Vincenzo Nibali on the rollers).
The other main type of trainer is the turbo trainer, this uses various means of putting resistance on your wheel to mimic resistance out of the road. The turbo trainer doesn’t on the whole feel as natural as rollers or real riding, but they can feature adjustable amounts of resistance. A great feature of the turbo trainer is that is clamps the rear axle of the bike, which leaves the bike secured in the frame of the trainer. The more expensive ones will offer resistance adjustment, and the best will offer bar-mounted resistance adjustment, meaning that you can adjust the resistance whilst ‘riding’, and carry out proper intervals.
Firstly there is the air resistance turbo, this simply uses a fan to sap some of your energy. These are the cheapest type of turbo. Some air turbos offer resistance adjustability, some however don’t, which leaves just the gears on your bike to adjust during your session.
Direct drive is a fairly new type, where your back wheel is removed completely and your chain is fitted around a cassette on the machine. These immobilise your bike completely, creating a very stable experience, but come at a big premium.
Some turbo trainers can be hooked up to a virtual reality system where the resistance is adjusted according to a hill profile on a course, and a screen will display a video. These systems will even relay your progress to a central server, so you can record your efforts, and even race others in real time.
A couple of points worth mentioning include: Turbo trainers are noisy beasts, your adjoining neighbours may not be amused, some people lay rubber mats to absorb some of the noise. Also turbos raise your rear end off the ground by a couple of inches, and therefore a block for your front wheel can be a good idea.
Refurbished Exercise Bikes
One alternative to buying a brand new exercise bike, is to look at refurbished or ex-demo models. Even for home users looking for a good quality bike, a refurbished indoor cycle or exercise bike can be much more cost effective and are often better quality pieces of equipment.
If you do decide to buy a refurbished or ex-demo model, it’s important to ask what work has actually been done to the bike during the refurbishment. When Origin Fitness refurbish a spin bike, we take all of the components off the bike and make sure all the parts are in working order. If we find any parts that are damaged we replace them. When required, we also sand blast all metal parts to remove as much of the cosmetic wear and tear as possible.
